The need for qualified professionals who can carry out projects and manage urban planning processes in developing countries is clear. The highest urbanisation ratios in the world can be found in these countries, and it is here where international cooperation is most necessary. However, issues related to high-speed transformation are also affecting cities in developed countries in the northern hemisphere.
If we add to this the impact of an earthquake, a tsunami or a war, the situation is critical and intervention is required in the areas of construction, architecture and urban planning, in order to know how to develop a plan for temporary development and settlements. This involves fast construction processes that are efficient under extreme conditions, managing the existing resources, and providing solutions that can be implemented in these types of situations in which work must unfortunately be carried out under pressure of various types.
The purpose of the Masters Degree in International Cooperation in Sustainable Emergency Architecture is to prepare future architects and professionals to tackle these situations and carry out urban planning, housing and emergency construction projects. These professionals will be able to deal with regional planning, settlements, and emergency reconstruction. They will employ specific tools to apply appropriate strategies in order to support the development and recovery of affected communities. The programme therefore aims to establish strategies and criteria for taking action in the areas of urban planning, neighbourhood development and the implementation of architectural projects; while bearing in mind energy efficient systems and sustainability criteria in all areas related to the material and also to local cultures. Furthermore, the programme will train experts to provide solutions for large-scale problems generated by massive and sudden change, professionals who can study and carry out research on materials, city planning, economics, environmental and social aspects, all based on principles of sustainability.
This Masters Programme forms part of the Erasmus Mundus European cooperation programme, which is considered to be one of the most prestigious programmes in the world. The Mundus Urbano programme is a joint European Masters degree programme offered by the following universities: Technische Universität Darmstadt, Università di Roma Tor Vergata, Université Pierre-Mendès-France Grenoble and the Universitat Internacional de Catalunya in Barcelona.
