An international doctorate mention is considered to add value to the quality of a particular thesis.
The Doctorate Academic Committee should ensure that the decision of the doctoral candidate, according to the thesis supervisor, is based on an initial approach of academic quality, responsibility and commitment.
In accordance with current legislation, the degree certificate of Doctor may include the mention of “International Doctor” on the reverse side provided that the following circumstances apply:
That during the training period necessary to obtain the qualification of Doctor, the doctoral candidate has spent a minimum of three months outside Spain at a higher education or research centre of recognised prestige, either studying or engaged in research work. This stay and the activities must be endorsed by the thesis supervisor and authorised by the Academic Committee, and will be added to the doctoral candidate’s Record of Activities.
That part of the doctoral thesis, at the very least the summary and conclusions, are written and presented in one of the regular languages of the scientific community in that particular field of knowledge which is different from any of the official languages used in Spain. This regulation is not applicable when the placements, reports and experts come from a Spanish-speaking country.
That the thesis has been reported on by a minimum of two expert Doctors belonging to a non-Spanish higher education or research centre.
That at least one expert from a non-Spanish higher education or research centre, with the qualification of Doctor, who is different from the supervisor mentioned in section a) above, forms part of the assessment board of the thesis.
The defence of the thesis must take place in the same Spanish university in which the doctoral candidate is enrolled or, in the case of jointly-tutored doctoral programmes, in either of the participating universities or according to the terms specified in the collaboration agreement.
The Doctorate Academic Committee should assess, before the defence of the thesis, whether all the requirements necessary for this international mention have been fulfilled. If the Doctorate Academic Committee approves the documentation presented, it will notify the secretary of the thesis defence board to issue a special certificate.
The secretary of the board should certify, in writing on the minutes, that the requirements for an international mention on the doctoral certificate have been met. This mention will be shown on the back of the degree certificate as well as on any other documents accrediting this qualification.
As an exception, candidates who defended their theses before this regulation came into effect who can accredit their compliance with all the points detailed above can also apply for this international mention to be added to their doctoral degree.
