UIC Barcelona School of Architecture regularly edits publications describing the work carried out by the school's students and lecturers, with the aim of highlighting and circulating this information, not only within the school itself, but also among members of the general public. In UIC Barcelona School of Architecture publications are seen as the optimum method to disseminate the pedagogic line implemented in the school, and to describe the aspects or subjects which make the school unique, such as the Vertical Workshop which we organise at the beginning of each academic year and the Foros, which provide a space for both reflection and debates. Also there is the Ceramics Chair, and the emphasis placed on issues such as cooperation, sustainability and accessibility.
Reflections on development and cooperation
The book 'Reflections on development and cooperation' discusses and questions very broad contemporary issues related to Development and its discontents including: Economic, Social and Spatial relationships within the Global North and South. This collection represents multi-cultural, multi-dimensional and interdisciplinary reflections envisioned as a discussion platform regarding development, cooperation, risk and urban renewal themes, practices and theories. It aims to question and interrogate the status quo of what has long been taken for granted in the field.
The authors each take a mature and profound look at a common subject from a reflective and often unexpected perspective; therefore, its wealth lies in the debates and questions raised rather than in the potential answers provided. It ends by exploring current international trends to reveal the highly volatile state of flux in the field, revealing the distinct opportunities for new approaches in future practice. The book was not conceived as a debate for new or future development and cooperation, but it has led to this result. It presents a provocative and fresh introspection of the inner workings in a field in desperate need of renewal as well as promising opportunities and future pathways of inquiry.
LAU 2. Regeneration intermediate territories
CEIM. Chair for Industrialised Construction and the Environment
This publication shows the work from the Sustainibility 2 subject that was awarded prizes and sponsored by the CEIM Chair. It acts as a presentation of the Chair and its sponsors.
Vertical Workshop 2008 & 2009
These Multidimensional Workshops held in 2008 and 2009 both dealt with the same subject, games, although from different points of view. The first workshop focused attention on location, and the second on sociability. This book describes the two workshops and contains a large amount of the work which was carried out on both occasions.
ESARQ-Roca Forums 2008-2009
This publication contains abstracts from the seventeen conferences and the two round tables which took place during the 2008-09 ESARQ-Roca Forum series and which, in line with the Forum objectives, aim to provide an overview of and a space for reflection on contemporary architecture.

Ceramic Materials 4
This monograph contains the contributions made by students and lecturers from the Barcelona Ceramics Chair during the 2007-2008 academic year. The Ceramics Chair is organised by the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura ESARQ (UIC School of Architecture) and the Asociación Española de Fabricantes de Azulejos y Pavimentos Cerámicos (Spanish Association for Ceramic Tile and Pavement Manufacturers)(ASCER).
Ceramic Materials 5
This publication aims to summarise the work carried out in the 2008-2009 academic year by the Barcelona Ceramics Chair in ESARQ (UIC School of Architecture) sponsored by ASCER (the Spanish Association for Ceramic Tile and Pavement Manufacturers). It reflects the work carried out by students, projects in which they demonstrate their creative and innovative ability and in which ceramics reveals its full potential.
Ceramic Materials 6
This publication aims to summarise the work carried out during the 2009-2010 academic year by the Barcelona Ceramics Chair in ESARQ-UIC, which is sponsored by ASCER. This work was undertaken by students and involved proposals to pave external spaces, as well as urban and public spaces. The projects presented here had to comply with the following premises: compositional flexibility (in terms of format, combinations, color and texture), being able to adapt to the specific conditions of an external pavement, and managing to reconcile the limitations and different elements of a public space.
Vertical Workshop 2010 (DVD)
The objective of the 2010 Vertical Workshop was to design and construct 10 emergency housing prototypes on a 1:1 scale for refugee camps. This DVD provides a summary of the experience which was carried out during an intensive week of work involving 20 lecturers and 201 students.
Gaudí in Paris in 1910
This catalogue describes the exhibition carried out in the Universitat Internacional de Catalunya, as a contribution towards the events taking place for the Year of Gaudí 2002. The main and essential part of the exhibition, which was carried out as part of the celebratory events for the 150th anniversary of Gaudí's birth, was the recreation of the Paris Show in 1910, with original photographs or reproductions based on old clichés or directly from books in which they were published.
It contains the reviews published by various newspapers and journals, as well as the catalogue of exhibition pieces, and it opens up a dialogue on opinions about this personage and his work, many areas of which are still to be researched.
This is the first publication about the Genetic Architecture line of research and Masters programme, set up and founded by Alberto T. Estévez in the year 2000 within the Escola Tècnica Superior d'Arquitectura de Barcelona, in the U.I.C. It covers the visionary theories of Alberto T. Estévez, and the theoretical principals presented by Alfons Puigarnau, the historian and philosopher.
The Genetic Architecture course also demonstrates projects and work by Dennis Dollens and Ignasi Pérez Arnal, looking in-depth at this, and revealing how environmental research and digital visualisation can go hand in hand, forming an innovative training methodology in terms of studios and workshops, in which both students and teachers complete the structure of what is botanical and ecological together.
Alfonso Pérez Méndez continues this conceptual pathway, both pedagogically and practically, by means of his memories of the Genetic Architecture Studio 02.
Joaquim Ruíz Millet describes how this line of high level research becomes a public discourse when participating within a certain context, his H2O Gallery in Barcelona.
Genetic Architecture II: Digital Tools & Organic Forms
This second book once again contains thoughts which converge in this teaching and research programme. For the first time, this volume describes what an ESARQ Forum involves, specifically the one held in 2004, which was entitled Biomorphic architecture. It is important to highlight the contributions of Karl S. Chu, as the director of the Forum, which involved a summary of the conferences he had given, as well as some of his guest lectures.
This book also contains a selection of the exhibits from the annual exhibition which the ESARQ moved to an exterior space in order to make the project related research carried out as part of the Postgraduate programme more visible publically. This is also related to the speech itself made at the ESARQ Forum 2004, which is also presented here.
Genetic Architecture III: New Biological and Digital Techniques
«Live Nature», landscapes and other fleshiness
As a result of his research related to the application of genetics to architecture, Alberto T. Estévez created the previously unpublished, surprising and strange images which this book contains: a selection of "altered" photographs of natural structures at their most inceptive and primitive level. The said research concentrates on the stratum from which cellular masses emerge and organise themselves in their first structural step.
Anything found via the use of an electronic miscroscope which opens up a dimension of reality, even if it's still not well known. Especially when certain prompted readings leads to a fascinating surrealism, which hold an enigmatic and evocative power.
BCN speed and friction. The Catalunya Circuit city
For the first time this book presents information about the ESARQ "Virtual Workshops". Specifically the seventh edition, from 2003, produced under the guidance of Kas Oosterhius and his Hyperbody Research Group in the Delft University of Technology is referred to here.
The book provides a presentation of the workshops, and a description of how they are managed, as well as some of the interventions they involve, and the conceptual scenario established and developed around them. This also includes the methodology, the project and production resources, their reason for being, their results and the ideas which have arisen from them.
