Frequently Asked Questions

1. I am unable to view the library website on my computer. What should I do?

This problem has many possible causes. Below are some suggestions of checks that can be performed:

  • Your web browser should be either Mozilla Firefox 2.x, Internet Explorer 5.0 or above, or Safari.
  • The website is designed for a screen resolution of 800 x 600 pixels; image quality is maximised if your screen is configured to this resolution.
  • The window should be maximised. This should happen automatically on entering the website. However, if at any stage the user reduces the size of the window, some pages may lose some of their visual quality.
  • The PC and search engine should be configured to the appropriate language. In the case of Spanish, a good option is that of Spanish (traditional spelling).
  • To access the library section, your web browser must be able to accept cookies. This is a configuration option within the web browser that needs to be activated.
If all of the above steps are followed and you continue to have problems, we recommend you contact a specialist.

2. How can I cancel a reservation for a book or journal?

To cancel a reservation, it is necessary to visit the reservation management section and click on “see my reservations and loans” (“ver mis reservas y préstamos”)

In the window that appears, go to the table of active reservations and click on the icon "wastepaper basket" in the corresponding row.

3. How can I see what items I have reserved?

Click on “see my reservations and loans” (“ver mis reservas y préstamos”)
This opens a window which contains the reservations table. Each row of this table corresponds to a separate reservation. In this table you can also consult the status of the book or journal and any other information pertaining to it.

4. I have had a book reserved for a long time and I still haven’t heard anything. How can I find out what is happening?

To begin with, you need to find out if the reservation for the book is still active.

If the item is still reserved, you can consult the conditions of the reservation: how many people are above you on the list; the approximate date on which the book is scheduled to become available to you; whether there is an overdue loan or not, etc. (to find out more about obtaining this type of information, please refer to the attached document about the reservation of books or journals).

If the reservation is no longer active, it means that, for whatever reason, it has been cancelled. If this is the case, you will need to identify the reservation in the reservations table which should include an outline of the reason(s) for the cancellation.

5. What happens if I do not return a book or journal on time?

If a user is in possession of an overdue item, they cannot borrow or reserve any other books or journals.

The moment the book or journal is returned, the user responsible for its late return is suspended from using the library facilities for a period 1½ times longer than the original delay in returning the item.

For example, if someone returns four books or journals late by three working days (bank holidays not included), they incur a suspension in their library privileges for a period of 4½ working days (1½ x 3) per item, which in this particular case would mean a total period of 18 days.

This suspension of service also extends to the user’s reservation rights.

If there is reasonable justification for the delay in returning the book or journal, the user should explain this to a member of the library staff before returning the item in question.

6. How can I find more information about a book or journal that I have seen in the catalogue?

To begin with, it is necessary to locate the item on the search engine. Clicking on the registration number of the book or journal (column titled Reg.) should activate a file which contains detailed information about the relevant item.
