Live Surgical Broadcasts at UIC's 4th Implantology Symposium

The UIC welcomed more than 400 people to the 4th Implantology Symposium to exchange knowledge on recent advances in oral implantology. On Thursday, 19 November 2009, the pre-symposium was held on the Sant Cugat campus, and at midday on Friday, 20 November, the symposium was officially inaugurated in the main lecture hall on the Barcelona campus.

This year, the symposium focused on topics such as aesthetics in implantology, guided implant surgery, immediate loading/function, preprosthetic and reconstructive surgery, tissue engineering and prosthetics in implantology. The current state of guided surgery, and new diagnostic and treatment-planning programmes were also reviewed. The latest advances in preprosthetic surgery and bone regeneration for oral rehabilitation with implant-supported prostheses were also presented.

Nearly twenty renowned speakers from Spain and abroad read papers at the symposium, including Dr. Andrea Chierico from Verona; Dr. Rafael Martín-Granizo from Hospital Clínico San Carlos and Dr. Federico Hernández Alfaro from the UIC.

Also participating in the symposium were professors from other universities with the aim of encouraging the exchange of knowledge and teaching experience. Participating institutions included New York University, the University of Florida, the Universidad Europea de Madrid, the Universidad de Santiago de Compostela, the Universidad de Valencia and the Universidade de Lisboa.

The symposium was targeted at all professionals in oral implantology: dentists, stomatologists, implantologists, prosthodontists, oral and maxillofacial surgeons, periodonists, specialists in dental aesthetics, dental prosthetic technicians and postgraduate students.

The symposium is held every other year and is promoted by the UIC Faculty of Dentistry through its Master’s Programme in Implantology: Surgery and Oral Prostheses. The symposium was inaugurated on Friday, 20 November 2009 by UIC Rector Dr. Argemí.
