Care in the Current Healthcare System the Main Theme of Nursing Graduation Ceremony

Montserrat Comella, the Healthcare Coordinator at the Terrassa Healthcare Consortium, was the keynote speaker at the Nursing graduation ceremony that took place in the main lecture hall on Saturday, 19 June 2010. She spoke about how the current social outlook is affecting the healthcare system. The ceremony took place in the context of the International Year of the Nurse.

The graduation ceremony was held in the main lecture hall on Saturday, 19 June 2010. A total of 100 students graduated from the diploma programme in Nursing, the Master’s Programme in Nursing Sciences and the Postgraduate Programme in Surgical Nursing, Anaesthesia and Reanimation.

Montserrat Comella, the Healthcare Coordinator at the Terrassa Healthcare Consortium, explained that the population’s increase in life expectancy will lead to an ageing population that will create an imbalance in the healthcare system. She went on to explain that the high levels of immigration are also increasing demand in the healthcare system, in which matters relating to dependence and care will take precedence.

The ceremony was presided over by Dr. Albert Balaguer, the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, who was accompanied by Dr. Cristina Monforte, the Director of Nursing Studies, and Dr. Albert Gallart and Dr. Lola Bardallo, the Assistant Directors of Nursing.

Dr. Bardallo reminded them that they were graduating in the International Year of the Nurse, an academic year in which the students participated in commemorative events, including a tribute to Florence Nightingale, a nurse who laid the foundations for professionalizing the career of nursing.

Dr. Gallart, the Director of the Master’s Programme, congratulated his students in particular and said that he hoped they would “continue towards doctoral degrees”.

Lastly, Dr Cristina Monforte, the new Director of Nursing Studies, congratulated the students and reminded them that they were now professional colleagues.

Following the presentation of the diplomas, the student representatives from each course gave speeches in which they recalled some anecdotes. The ceremony was concluded with the traditional singing of Gaudeamus Igitur.
