Many patients who go to the dental surgery to receive dental treatment are of an advanced age, with systemic illnesses which require accurate knowledge of them and their implications and interactions in the field of dentistry, or with cardiovascular, immunological, endocrinal and metabolic pathologies, which the dentist must understand to provide treatment correctly, in a manner that is safe to both patient and dentist. Likewise, those with any type of disability present complex challenges that are difficult for dentists to resolve. In addition to this is the appearance of secondary oral lesions as a result of taking certain medications or interactions between them, or as oral manifestations of underlying systemic diseases. All of these are considered special patients.
This Clinical Residency programme aims to ensure that the student acquires the knowledge necessary to carry out all kinds of dentistry treatments in patients with complex medical pathologies, systemic diseases with dental effects, polypharmacy patients, elderly patients and patients with disabilities, whether or not they are cooperative, and to be able to assess and identify all kinds of oral lesions.
- To train dentists who are aware of medical and pharmaceutical pathologies which condition dental treatment in patients who are older or have disabilities.
- To train dentists who are able to incorporate older people into multidisciplinary care teams.
- To train dentists who are able to learning the particularities of dental treatment that are resolved in hospital environments under sedation and/or anaesthesia.
- To train dentists who are interested in research and the study of the elderly, disability and oral pathologies.
- To train dentists who are able to treat patients who are medically or pharmaceutically compromised.
- To train dentists who are able to learn diagnostic management and treatment of mucosal injuries.
