Introduction

The aim of this programme is primarily to provide students with a range of skills when speaking for different purposes in a professional context.

The programme contains elements that include online lessons, quizzes and self-study materials. The lessons focus on the basic principles of public speaking and the speechmaking process.

The lessons, quizzes and self-study tasks will focus on student development and interpersonal skills and will provide students with the essential knowledge on how to prepare and deliver a public speech and/or presentation in the field of science. The final exam will consist of a short talk prepared, delivered and recorded by the student using audio-visual resources.

The elements of this course have been specifically designed to provide students with the skills, knowledge and resources that will increase their confidence in order to communicate effectively in public and in English.

 

 

Pre-course requirements

 

 

Students should preferably have an overall B2 level of English before the start of the course.

Objectives

Classroom:

To prepare and equip students with the necessary skills needed for oral production through a series of reading, application, and speaking assignments that build systematically upon one another.

Tutorial:

To develop students’ interpersonal skills and ability to work with others in both native and an additional language. 

Self-study:

To develop autonomy with respect to preparing themselves for speaking in public through drafting and rehearsing.

Competences/Learning outcomes of the degree programme

         

 

  • CB10 - Acquire learning skills that allow them to continue studying in a self-directed and autonomous mode.
  • CB6 - Knowledge and understanding to provide a basis or opportunity for originality in developing and / or applying ideas in a research context.
  • CB7 - To apply the acquired knowledge, and develop their ability to solve problems in new environments within broader (or multidisciplinary) contexts related to their field of study.
  • CB8 - Integrate knowledge and deals with the complexity of formulate judgments based on scientific evidence, from information that may be incomplete or limited, include reflecting on social and ethical responsibilities linked to the application of their knowledge and judgments.
  • CB9 - Communicate findings, knowledge and reasons to present to specialists and non-specialists in a clear and unambiguous.
  • CE5 - Knowing how to communicate the results of scientific research paper, poster or oral presentation both scientific and academic format.
  • CE7 - Knowing how to interpret the images obtained through the latest technology applicable to a research study in dentistry.
  • CG1 - Ability to integrate new knowledge through research and study, and deal with complexity
  • CG4 - Ability to argue and defend own scientific ideas and listen, analyze, evaluate and respond to the ideas of another person.
  • CT1 - Ability to work in multidisciplinary and multicultural groups

Learning outcomes of the subject

 

Students will be able to:

1. Know how to present research findings to the scientific community verbally and in writing.
2. Demonstrate the ability to work independently and as a team.

 

Syllabus

Academic skills:

Students will learn how to organize the ideas found in their research, how to support those ideas with evidence and reasoning, how to express themselves clearly and convincingly in order to write and make oral presentations. These will vary in style, structure and content ranging from a research poster presentation to the presentation of a scientific article.

Language skills:

Students will learn the language structures and the correct format for quoting, paraphrasing, citing, summarizing and synthesizing information.

In order to cover all major aspects of speech preparation and bearing in mind students’ needs, the classroom will become a training ground where students develop skills that will serve them throughout life. They will work individually, in pairs and in groups, learning to learn from one another and accepting criticism in a constructive way.

Teacher-led lessons will be based on the linguistic competencies outlined in the Master’s programme and will be evaluated in the following way:
