Introduction

In the event that the health authorities announce a new period of confinement due to the evolution of the health crisis caused by COVID-19, the teaching staff will promptly communicate how this may effect the teaching methodologies and activities as well as the assessment.


This course is the first part of Experimental Animal Models and is intended to introduce students to the knowledge of Laboratory Animal Science.

Objectives

To give adequate training so that students are able to apply scientific and technical aspects of Laboratory Animal Science in Biomedical Research experimental knowledge.

Competences/Learning outcomes of the degree programme

  • CB10 - Acquire learning skills that allow them to continue studying in a self-directed and autonomous mode.
  • CB6 - Knowledge and understanding to provide a basis or opportunity for originality in developing and / or applying ideas in a research context.
  • CB7 - To apply the acquired knowledge, and develop their ability to solve problems in new environments within broader (or multidisciplinary) contexts related to their field of study.
  • CB8 - Integrate knowledge and deals with the complexity of formulate judgments based on scientific evidence, from information that may be incomplete or limited, include reflecting on social and ethical responsibilities linked to the application of their knowledge and judgments.
  • CE1 - Ability to apply the scientific method, the experimental design and the biostatistics to solve a problem or corroborate hypothesis.
  • CE10 - Know how to apply the epistemological, ethical, legal and humanitarian exercise in research and dissemination of results.
  • CE4 - Apply experimental animal models as well as the methodology of animal handling and ethical concepts in research in dentistry.
  • CG1 - Ability to integrate new knowledge through research and study, and deal with complexity
  • CG2 - Ability to review analysis and discussion of the experimental results and to issue the corresponding conclusions.
  • CT1 - Ability to work in multidisciplinary and multicultural groups

Learning outcomes of the subject

After completing the course, the student will understand the basis of Laboratory Animal Science regarding animal models of research, the methodology of animal handling and the factors that influence experimentation. You will learn the fundamentals of experimental design, research protocols in laboratory animals and alternative methods of animal research.

The student:
• Will be able to work in a multidisciplinary team.
• Will be able to integrate new knowledge through research and study, and deal with complexity.
• Will be able to able to apply the knowledge acquired in solving problems in a new or changing environment.
• Will be able to critically read scientific literature and recognize parts within the chosen line of research.
• Will have self-learning ability in the development of analytical techniques in the acquisition of new concepts from the field of molecular and cell biology, microbiology, pharmacology, anatomy, biomaterials, tissue regeneration and the search for new scientific information.
