Introduction

In the event that the health authorities announce a new period of confinement due to the evolution of the health crisis caused by COVID-19, the teaching staff will promptly communicate how this may effect the teaching methodologies and activities as well as the assessment.


Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics is the area of dentistry that deals with the supervision, guidance and correction of growth and maturation of the craniofacial structures.

Major responsibilities of orthodontic practice include the diagnosis, prevention, interception and treatment of occlusion anomalies and associated changes in bone and soft tissue.

The orthodontist should monitor the guidance of the dentition and the relationship between their supporting structures to achieve and maintain harmonious relations between the face and cranial structures that allow the patient physiology and dento-facial aesthetics optimal.

The course focuses orthodontic techniques in the description of orthodontic appliances, both fixed and removable.

Objectives

The educational objectives for this course of orthodontic techniques comprise a set of educational activities for knowledge and manipulation of appliance that is used in orthodontics.

In this course the different techniques for orthodontic treatment will be studied.

The objectives of the labs are acquiring skill in handling the wires forming orthodontic appliances and the construction of such appliances.

Competences/Learning outcomes of the degree programme

The end of the course students should be competent in:

Using removable appliances including aligners

Using functional appliances

Use of extraoral appliances

Using sectional fixed appliances

Using vestibular and lingual appliances

Using temporary anchorage devices

Using retention devices

Learning outcomes of the subject

The orthodontist at the end of their university education must learn and master different types of appliances

They should get the domain of multibrackets vestibular appliances in some of its prescriptions and knowledge of other prescriptions.

They should be able to use removable appliances and functional appliances

It must be competent in retention devices

It has to be trained to treat cases of lingual orthodontic appliances and "invisible aligners."

1. Removable Appliance.

4. Sectional aparatology.

5. Full arch appliances.

6. Retention appliances.

Laboratory practice

1. Bending wire: Arches, loops, clasps.

2. Preparation of appliances. Bending wire applied to the construction of fixed appliances, removable and auxiliary.
