Introduction
Analyse and study the most relevant contemporary literature in the field of Periodontics.
Students will become familiar with this literature and use it to base their clinical practice and to justify their treatment.
Pre-course requirements
It is necessary to approve the literature review subject.
Objectives
Have comprehensive knowledge of all periodontal flap surgery including access flaps and apically positioned flaps, with or without concomitant osseous surgery, their indications and contraindications, advantages and disadvantages.
Have comprehensive knowledge of all mucogingival and plastic periodontal surgery procedures, their indications and contraindications, advantages and disadvantages and new materials.
Have comprehensive knowledge of all reconstructive periodontal surgery procedures, their indications and contraindications, advantages and disadvantages and new materials.
Competences/Learning outcomes of the degree programme
Students will be competent at critically evaluating the scientific literature and recognizing the most common bias, updating their knowledge base and evaluating scientific and technological developments as they arise.
Syllabus
First quarter: Resective periodontal surgery
Second quarter: Mucogingival surgery
Third quarter: Guided tissue regeneration and ridge preservation augmentation
Teaching and learning activities
In person
The class methodology will be the following: each student will read and review five articles per class and each article will be presented in a power point document (aim, methods and materials, results, discussion and conclusions). The faculty will show clinical cases related with the articles.
Evaluation systems and criteria
In person
The lecture evaluation will be done at the end of the trimester with an essay examination. Students must obtain a minimum score of 7 points to pass the exam.
