Introduction

This topic integrates practically most of the necessary skills to get started in the field of research and assessed in an integrated manner the necessary skills to join later a doctoral program.

Pre-course requirements

English medium level.

Computer skills basic level.

Objectives

To learn to start a protocol for in vitro research, clinical or experimentral approved by the relevant committees according to the characteristics of each protocol.

Competences/Learning outcomes of the degree programme

  • To acquire learning skills to allow to continue studying in a self-directed and autonomous mode.
  • To acquire the knowledge and understanding to provide a basis or opportunity for originality in developing and to apply the acquired knowledge, and develop their ability to solve problems in new environments within broader (or multidisciplinary) contexts related to their field of study.
  • To integrate knowledge and deals with the complexity of formulate judgments based on scientific evidence, from information that may be incomplete or limited, include reflecting on social and ethical responsibilities linked to the application of their knowledge and judgments.
  • To communicate findings, knowledge and reasons to present to specialists and non-specialists in a clear and unambiguous.
  • To develop the ability to apply the scientific method, the experimental design and the biostatistics to solve a problem or corroborate hypothesis.
  • To know how to apply the epistemological, ethical, legal and humanitarian exercise in research and dissemination of results.
  • To develop the ability to apply bioinformatics tools used in basic research.
  • To learn to manage financial and human resources of a research project and meet the strategic basis for the transfer of new knowledge to the company or industry.
  • To develop the ability to integrate new knowledge through research and study, and deal with complexity.
  • To develop the self learning ability in the development of new techniques, in the knowledge of new scientific concepts and in the search of new scientific information.
  • To develop the ability to argue and defend own scientific ideas and listen, analyze, evaluate and respond to the ideas of another person.
  • To develop the ability to work in multidisciplinary and multicultural groups.

Learning outcomes of the subject

Define the main concepts of research in health sciences.

Describe the different phases of the research process.

Distinguish between models of quantitative and qualitative research, identifying the main advantages and limitations of both models.

Structuring an appropriate strategy for literature search in major databases related to health sciences.

Access to documentary sources identified in the literature search, downloading the full documents for evaluation.

Critically evaluate scientific literature found.

Describe the basic concepts related to measurement variables and obtaining quantitative data.

Describe the different methods of obtaining quantitative data and identify them in published studies.

Identify the different types of scientific papers, structure and characteristics and rules of publishing them.

Write a scientific summary for the preliminary presentation of results at conferences and congresses, as well as to develop an oral and / or poster

Syllabus

The first year students must present a research protocol performed by their director and tutor of the masters research program. This protocol can be a new project, a continuous previous study or a non-initiated third year student project (see below). All the protocols of the research project are presented to the responsible for the endodontics masters research before November of the first year. This written research protocol includes a brief literature review, rationale and experimental outline (see document X1 or appendix). The protocol is evaluated by the responsible of the endodontic research and the program director and corrections are sent to the main investigator, tutor and student when considered necessary. Once the protocol is considered adequate it is presented to the commission of evaluation of the masters research projects of the University. Once approval of this commission is granted, a letter of approval is sent to the investigators via administration service. University Ethics Committee approval is required before starting any investigation study following to different paths if it is a laboratory (Research ethics committee or CER) or a clinical study (Clinical ethics investigation committee or CEIC).

It is expected that all the students submit to the annual national endodontic association (AEDE) meeting or biannual European Endodontic congress (ESE) their preliminary research findings for presentation in the form of oral or poster communication as considered adequate by the program director.

Results and the final draft of this research project must be presented in the June 15th (Exact data is determined every year according to calendar). The quality of the final research should be good enough for submission for publication in respected dental journals, such as the IEJ, JOE or national journals. Thus a paper corresponding to the final draft data must be submitted to the considered more appropriate paper of the JCR list.

Teaching and learning activities

In person

The student will be assigned a tutor and a research study director.

Periodically, meetings with both of them will be arranged to discuss about the study performance for continuous evaluation of the study and the student progress in the study, ensuring he/she adquires all the skills to accomplish the necessary competencies and learning outcomes.

Non-presential activities

-       Working group (TG)

-       Self-work (TA)

Follow-up activities:

-       Tutorials (TU)

-       Evaluation (EV)

Evaluation systems and criteria

In person

Evaluation of the endodontic research project is performed continuously.

-       TG 10%

-       TA 60%

-       TU 30%
