Introduction

Restorative dentistry includes all those treatments that target the oral rehabilitation of the patient both functionally and aesthetically. Therefore, for the subject of treatment planning, clinical cases are presented which have involved different areas of dentistry, especially endodontics and dental aesthetics. The goal is to offer students a comprehensive idea of all the steps that must be performed to achieve a correct diagnosis, and subsequent successful treatment.

Pre-course requirements

No previous requirements

Objectives

To understand all of the steps needed to arrive at an accurate diagnosis and establish the most appropriate treatment in each situation.

To acquire training and skills in oral expression through students presenting clinical cases.

To understand the concepts of pulpoperiapical diagnosis.

To knowing the characteristics of an aesthetic smile.

To learn how to produce a restorative treatment plan and determine its degree of difficulty.

Competences/Learning outcomes of the degree programme

Students will be expected to:

Develop the capacity for self-learning in the development of new instrumental techniques, the acquisition of new scientific concepts and the search for new scientific information.

Argue and defend their own scientific ideas as well as to listen, analyse, evaluate and respond to the ideas of others.

Acquire learning skills that allow them to continue studying in a self-directed and autonomous manner.

Understand how to provide a basis or opportunity for originality in developing and/or applying ideas in a research context.

Apply acquired knowledge and develop a problem-solving ability in new environments within broader (or multidisciplinary) contexts related to the field of study in question.

Communicate knowledge, conclusions and the essential concepts that support them to specialised and non-specialised audiences in a clear and unambiguous way.

Know how to apply the appropriate diagnostic techniques and correctly interpret the results derived from them.

Develop the ability to integrate new knowledge acquired through research and study and deal with complexity.

Perform a correct analysis and diagnosis taking into account multidisciplinary factors of the masticatory system.

Acquire the skills to apply the scientific method, and to apply the knowledge obtained when solving problems within a scientific sphere.

Learn how to undertake both in vitro and in vivo research projects within the fields of mechanics, biology and micro-biology as they apply to endodontics.

Have autonomy in developing and applying new technologies in restorative endodontics and in the search for new scientific information, and to acquire the ability to assess and undertake research projects.

Be able to practice as a clinical and/or research professional in the field of aesthetic restorative dentistry, acting as an authentic specialist or expert on the subject being able to diagnose, treat, prevent and research pulpoperiapical pathologies and to keep up-to-date in the diagnostic and therapeutic advances that emerge during their professional lives.

Acquire the skill to perform endodontic treatments and restorations on mucous membrane in patients presenting with the destruction of the hard tissues of the tooth and/or pulpoperiapical pathology in a multidisciplinary way.

Be able to give public presentations of their own clinical cases, based on the literature, using the correct terminology relating to dental pathologies.

Acquire the scientific criteria to select the type of material appropriate for each case of restorative dental treatment, as well as knowing how maintain a constantly updated knowledge of the bioceramic materials used in the fields of endodontics and restorations, their use, properties, indications, biocompatibilities and toxicity.

Be able to search and organise biomedical information sources and make a critical analysis of the scientific literature on issues relating to restorative dentistry, in order to able to continue their on-going training in a self-directed and autonomous manner.

Recognise and interpret the specialised imaging and diagnostic techniques that may be relevant in the diagnosing of dental pathologies.

Have the self-sufficiency to take a medical history and perform oral examinations; filling in the clinical record and its clinical progress with the scientific language and terminology expected from a professional in endodontics.

Be able to diagnose and prevent dental disorders and to keep up to date with diagnostic and therapeutic advances that may develop throughout their professional careers.

Learning outcomes of the subject

Students will be expected to:

Know what the relationship is between endodontics and restorative dentistry.

Understand the role of the endodontist within an interdisciplinary team.

Learn the basic principles of aesthetics with implants.

Learn the basic principles of treatment planning in dental rehabilitation.

Syllabus

Pulpoperiapical pathology

Clinical techniques in endodontics.

Aesthetic diagnosis.

Aesthetic and restorative treatment plan.

Management of the patient with partial edentulism.

Reconstruction of the endodontic tooth.

All of the topics given by the student up to this point in the seminars

Teaching and learning activities

In person

The student will present a case in the field of restorative dentistry to teachers and students. The student will then face questions about the case by teachers and fellow students and must defend and justify decisions taken based on the literature.

The requirements for the case presentations are:

1. Cases of sufficient endodontic complexity to test the diagnostic and therapeutic competence of an expert in Endodontics. 2. Unusual diagnostic or treatment situations.

All cases shall be presented in a logical and coordinated manner. The case presentation should allow the student to express his/her thought processes, understanding for treatment planning and use the literature to document and support his/her endodontic knowledge base.

Evaluation systems and criteria

In person

The student's presentations and the defence will be assessed.

Bibliography and resources

The references used in each case presentation will be based on reviews of theoretical literature in the seminars. Students will also explore the subject further by reading new articles related to the topic.
