Introduction

In the Final Master’s Degree Project (TFM) the students will put into practice all the knowledge acquired regarding clinical research and materials throughout the programme. The mentor or tutor will be responsible for this and will conduct the assessment and monitor the development of the Final Master’s Degree Project. This project can have either a clinical or a research focus. It must adhere to all the details of the protocol, which is designed and authorised during the first semester of the Master’s Degree, when a working hypothesis and specific objectives are also established. Once the research and study results are achieved, the student will have to develop a written report of his/her clinical or research work, following the rigorous scientific standards learned throughout the Master’s Degree programme.

Clinical Final Master’s Degree Projects will have as a main goal the review of a specific pathology or therapeutic technique for patients, in which the student has directly participated in the decision-making or has performed the treatments themself. The bibliographical review, the knowledge of the pathologies’ theoretical principles and the level of surgical skills will be taken into account in order to be able to undertake this type of Final Master’s Degree Project.

Research Final Master’s Degree Projects will be laboratory-focused, with research on topics or materials related to the dental aesthetics and prosthetics field. Based on previous studies (internal or external to UIC Barcelona) and following the criteria of scientific method, research work can be designed to provide more information when delimiting the multiple variables that appear in the clinical practice on patients.

Pre-course requirements

None

Objectives

1. Identify current issues to add to scientific literature.

2. Be able to write a research protocol.

3 Carry out clinical or laboratory research work.

4. Write a scientific paper.

5. Be able to write a Final Master’s Degree Project (TFM)

6. Present and defend the TFM before the Scientific Committee.

Competences/Learning outcomes of the degree programme

  • CB10 - Students should acquire the learning skills that allow them to continue to study.
  • CB6 - Students should have and understand knowledge that provides the basis for or opportunity to be original in terms of the development and application of ideas, often within a research context.
  • CB8 - Students should be able to incorporate knowledge and tackle the complexity of making judgements based on information which, being incomplete or limited, includes reflections on the social and ethical responsibility linked to the application of their knowledge and judgement
  • CB9 - Students should know how to express their conclusions, and the knowledge and reasoning these are based on, to specialised and non-specialised audiences in a clear and unambiguous way.
  • CE10 - Students should acquire the ability to apply scientific methods, and apply the knowledge acquired to resolving problems in a scientific field. They should learn how to develop research projects both in vitro and in vivo, within the fields of mechanics, biology and microbiology applied to prosthetic and restorative dentistry and dental implants.
  • CE11 - Students should be autonomous in terms of developing and applying new technologies to aesthetic restorative dentistry and searching for new scientific information, as well as acquiring the ability to evaluate and undertake the research and development projects the industry offers in an ethical way, and manage the financial and human resources, as well as be aware of the strategic basis for the transfer of new knowledge to the industry.
  • CE7 - To be able to search for, organise and analyse, from a critical point of view, and using biomedical sources of information, scientific literature on issues related to temporomandibular dysfunction and aesthetic restorative dentistry, in order to pursue continuing education in a self-directed and autonomous way.
  • CE8 - To know how to apply epistemological, ethical, legislational and humanitarian factors to research and the disclosure of scientific data in the field of aesthetic restorative dentistry.

Learning outcomes of the subject

- Design a research protocol based on scientific method

- Learn how to approach clinical or laboratory research, to develop a research project using the new techniques learned and manage time and resources.

- Correctly compose the introduction, justification, objectives, assumptions, status of the issue, materials and methods, results, discussion and conclusions of the Final Master’s Degree Project.

- Defend the “Final Master Project” before a Dentistry Committee.

Syllabus

The Final Master’s Degree Project (TFM) is the end result of the student’ work, tutored by the teacher, where they apply all the knowledge acquired during the course, including clinical and research materials.

The tutor monitors the work during the development of the research, the analysis of the results and findings thereof to ensure the acquisition of skills.

The Final Master’s Degree Project is the compendium of all the training received during the two-year master's degree programme. The Scientific Committee of the Faculty of Dentistry at the Universitat Internacional de Catalunya is composed of representatives of each area of the dental specialties and of the managers of the Faculty Board who contribute to this course, ensuring a consistent scientific quality according to the competences that this teaching module requires and who will evaluate it and authorise the protocol for this research or clinical project before performing it. Once the study is completed and the Final Master’s Degree Project report is written, this will be reviewed by the Scientific Committee. The review system for the Final Master’s Degree Project will focus on assessing the scientific and methodological rigor of the work done, taking into account the communication ability demonstrated by the student.

After it has been evaluated by the Scientific Committee, the student is authorised to defend their Final Master’s Degree Project before a Committee selected by the Faculty Board, and composed of three doctors, one of whom should be a specialist in the relevant area of study.

• Methodology of scientific literature review 10%

• Troubleshooting and initiative 10%

• Progression in student training 10%

• Defence of the Final Master’s Degree Project before the Committee 70%
