Introduction
The practices are following the provisions of Royal Decree 1707/2011, of November 18, which regulates the external academic practices of university students, as well as the provisions of the Internal Regulation that regulates practices in companies and institutions approved by the Executive Committee of the Governing Board of the International University of Catalonia (UIC) on 14.10.2013.
In this optional subject, certain competencies specific to the professional category of nurse are developed according to Law 44/2003 of November 21, on the organization of the health professions and other laws and regulations that regulate the competences in the exercise of the health professions, defining the specific itinerary leading to the specialty Emergency Nursing and Title Emergencies.

Competences/Learning outcomes of the degree programme
- CB7 - Students should be able to apply the knowledge acquired and have the ability to solve problems in new or little-known environments within broader (or multidisciplinary) contexts related to the field of study.
- CB8 - Students should be able to integrate their knowledge so that they can deal with the complexity involved in making judgements based on information that may be incomplete or limited, and may therefore require considerations of the social and ethical responsibilities involved in applying knowledge or judgement.
- CE01 - To have the ability to communicate with patients suffering from a disease that requires urgent treatment, managing resources for a patient-doctor conversation that is initially focused on the most important medical aspects.
- CE02 - Planning emergency care, assessing the psychological dimension of the suffering of patients and family members
- CE03 - When a patient has an intense or worsening condition, students should know how to identify and assess clinical indications of a risk to their life or a serious danger to their functions, establishing priorities for their treatment.
- CE05 - To use a patient's medical history and physical examination to identify the signs and symptoms of the most common serious conditions and serious complications to chronic conditions, correctly interpreting the information.
- CE06 - To demonstrate their knowledge and flexible and decisive handling of protocols and guidelines for clinical practice when dealing with the most serious or common conditions in urgent and emergency care.
- CE07 - To carry out a continuous re-evaluation of the patient in urgent and emergency care in order to readjust the provisional diagnosis and consequent change to the treatment plan when necessary.
- CE08 - To act decisively, accurately and efficiently when applying the invasive and non-invasive treatment techniques used in emergencies.
- CE09 - To recognise the risks associated with operation procedures and the diagnostic techniques and treatments employed in emergencies, and to carry them out as safely as possible in terms of the safety of the student, other professionals and the patient.
- CG1 - To know how to work in a multidisciplinary team in an independent way, and how to take the initiative to resolve any disputes or problems that arise between different professional perspectives.
- CG2 - To act fairly, making sure to offer equal opportunities and universal access to patients who require medical attention, encouraging respect for human rights and a social and sustainable coexistence.
- CG3 - To practice effective timekeeping and to manage activities so as to ensure efficient organisation and the best possible ability to adapt to unforeseen circumstances.
- CG6 - To apply current healthcare legislation related to both pre-hospital and hospital care.
- CT01 - To respect the ethical standards and laws that govern healthcare and the relationship with the patient in urgent and emergency care, as well as the ability to provide information on basic aspects of the same when required.
- CT02 - To continuously adapt and prioritise available resources to cover the needs of every patient and to maintain the quality of their care.
Learning outcomes of the subject
- Manages care in critical areas for medical, surgical and trauma emergencies attended in a hospital, as well as in the intensive care unit and anesthesia units.
- Knows and adequately handles sanitary biosecurity material and self-protection measures against risks and patient safety.
- Able to carry out the nursing diagnosis, carry out the comprehensive care of the patient and appropriately carry out the diagnostic and therapeutic prescriptions in emergencies of cardiology, vascular, respiratory, neurological, digestive, nephrourological, infectious, endocrinometabolic, mental health and in the palliative care patient.
- Able to carry out the nursing diagnosis, carry out the comprehensive care of the patient, and appropriately carry out the diagnostic and therapeutic prescriptions in gynecological and obstetric emergencies, including attendance at eutocic delivery.
- Able to carry out the nursing diagnosis, carry out comprehensive patient care, and properly carry out the diagnostic and therapeutic prescriptions in pediatric emergencies.
- Knows and is capable of appropriately carrying out the diagnostic and therapeutic prescriptions for analgesia, sedation, and relaxation in emergencies and emergencies.
- Able to carry out the nursing diagnosis, carry out the comprehensive care of the patient, and appropriately carry out the diagnostic and therapeutic prescriptions in musculoskeletal trauma emergencies.

- Knows how to care for the patient under mechanical ventilation or assisted ventilation, invasive, or non-invasive.
- Knows how to perform: peripheral venous canalization, intraosseous canalization.
- Knows how to prepare and assist in performing the central venous canalization technique.
- Knows how to perform: bladder catheterization, nasogastric and orogastric catheterization, gastric lavage.
- Knows how to perform: anterior nasal tamponade.
- Knows how to perform: pulse oximetry, capnography, blood gas, electrocardiography.
- Knows how to perform: extraction of samples for laboratory determinations in emergencies: blood count, coagulation study, plasma biochemistry, urine system, urinary sediment, toxic determination.
Syllabus
This subject consists of a rotary by the hospital emergency services, intensive care unit, and anesthesia (operating room and resuscitation) with the following time burden:
- Hospital Emergencies: 3 ECTS (75 hours)
- Intensive Care Unit: 6 ECTS (150 hours)
- Anesthesia (operating room and resuscitation): 3 ECTS (75 hours)
In this matter, the nursing student will be able to complete the process of acquiring the knowledge and skills that they have begun in modules I and II (subjects 1, 3, 4, and 5), in real circumstances, with the orientation and scope of their category. professional, under the supervision of an internship tutor.
Teaching and learning activities
In person
Totally face-to-face modality through rotation in health services.
The teaching methodology of the Nursing Specialty combines:
- Problem-based learning
- Practical learning by performance,
- Practical learning by model observation.
- The individual effort of the student
Rotations in the Nursing Specialty develop following an individual program in a network of health centers specifically selected for their care and research activity and their potential for the training of professionals.
This individual program is communicated to the student at the beginning of the academic year, and changes can be made at the student's request under certain conditions and requirements.
In each practical rotation, the student is tutored by a Practical Tutor, who will be an adequately qualified healthcare professional for clinical practice and for teaching, who will be in charge of guiding the student in their practical learning.
The Practice Coordinator will carry out individualized and continuous monitoring of the student during the development of the practices. As long as the pandemic circumstances derived from COVID advise limiting personal contact, the Internship Coordinator will maintain continuous contact with the internship centers and tutors, as well as with the students by telematic means and through online meetings via Meet; to guarantee learning and student satisfaction during the practical experience, in addition to consulting doubts and / or resolving conflicts.
Daily attendance at practices is mandatory. If for justified reasons it is not possible to attend the practices one day, the student must notify the Internship Coordinator, who will evaluate if the absence is justified and if so, if applicable and it is possible to reschedule.
Similarly, if for reasons derived from the Covid-19 pandemic it is necessary to suspend or interrupt any rotation, the Internship Coordinator will reschedule said rotation to the affected students whenever possible.
In any case, a maximum of 10% absences will be tolerated in the Rotations of the Nursing Specialty.
Evaluation systems and criteria

Telematic evaluation modality
In general terms, the practices will be evaluated taking into account the individual activity of the student, the evaluation on the job by the tutors / professionals, as well as the preparation by the student of the Practice Report.
During the practices, the student must prepare the Practice Report that will be delivered the day they finish. The delivery will be telematic through the virtual classroom.
The student must prepare and submit a Practice Report for the Nursing Specialty, which must contain the following information regarding the different types of services for which they have rotated (hospital emergency services, intensive care units and anesthesia):
- Description of the tasks performed in each service throughout the rotation period.
- Evaluation of the tasks carried out with the knowledge and skills acquired.
- List of the problems raised and the procedures followed to solve them.
- Identification of the contributions that the practices have made in terms of learning.
- Evaluation of practices and proposals for improvement.
On the other hand, each student's internship tutor will carry out the evaluation of the students tutored by him (by means of a telematic system) according to evaluative criteria adapted to each specific rotation, aligned with the objectives and learning criteria established in the academic memory. for the Nursing Specialty.
The final grade for the Nursing Specialty will be determined by:
- 60%: Average mark of all the evaluations carried out by the Practice Tutors in each of the rotations.
- 30%: Average mark of the Practice Report of the Nursing Specialty.
- 10%: Assistance and individual effort.
Bibliography and resources
They will be found in the Moodle Virtual Platform, including specific instructions for each rotation regarding calendar, schedules, location, instructions, uniformity, contact person, etc.
