Introduction

Molecular biology is the scientific discipline that aims to study the processes taking place in living organisms from a molecular point of view, particularly the interactions between the DNA, RNA and protein synthesis and how these interactions are regulated.

In this subject, the theorical contents about DNA and protein structure, protein synthesis and its regulation and tecnhiques for DNA/RNA and protein detection are presented as self-learning material and self-evaluation tests. To practice their ability to effectively communicate knowledge and scientific advances, students have to present the most relevant aspects of a research article, demosntrating their capacity for critical analysis of experimental results and drawing their own conclusions.

Pre-course requirements

Not required

Objectives

  • Revise basic concepts of Molecular and Cell Biology, such as organelles, macramolecules, DNA, RNA and proteins, signaling and cellular responses, and methods used in research.
  • Acquire systematic, rigorous and updated knowledge and a critical view of research papers.
  • Communicate information, ideas, problems and solutions.
  • Develop learning skills to continue studyng in an autonomous way.

Competences/Learning outcomes of the degree programme

  • CB10 - Acquire learning skills that allow them to continue studying in a self-directed and autonomous mode.
  • CB7 - To apply the acquired knowledge, and develop their ability to solve problems in new environments within broader (or multidisciplinary) contexts related to their field of study.
  • CG2 - Ability to review analysis and discussion of the experimental results and to issue the corresponding conclusions.
  • CG3 - Self learning ability in the development of new techniques, in the knowledge of new scientific concepts and in the search of new scientific information
  • CT1 - Ability to work in multidisciplinary and multicultural groups

Learning outcomes of the subject

  • Has ability to work in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Has ability to integrate new knowledge through research and study, and deal with complexity.
  • Has self-learning ability in the development of analytical techniques in the acquisition of new concepts from the field of molecular and cell biology and the search of new scientific information.

Syllabus

Session 1. Why do you need Cellular and Molecular Biology? Basic concepts and applications.

Session 2. New perspectives in cellular and molecular dentistry research. Techniques.

Session 3. Symposium of Cellular and Molecular dentistry Research

Teaching and learning activities

In person

Session 1. Presentation and quiz about basic concepts on molecular and cellular biology.

Session 2. Comprehensive reading of a research paper. Videos and mini-questionnaires about techniques.

Session 3. Symposium. Oral communications and quiz.

Evaluation systems and criteria

In person

General concepts quiz 10%

Attendance 20%

Oral communication 60%

Final quiz 10%

To the mean is necessary to have, at least, 4 points in all parts evaluated.

Attendance is mandatory. It is necessary to attend at least 2 of the 3 sessions to be able to pass the subject in 1st call.

The questionnaires will be multiple choices with four answer choices and only 1 correct. The correct answers sum +1 and the failures don't subtract.
