Introduction

MCP aims to give the student the possibility and ability to come into contact with the user (patient) of the specialized service, and also the possibility of learning about the professional health system, its organizational structure and the real role that they will play in it as a manual physiotherapists. They also provide the student with professional contact and the application of the theoretical and practical knowledge acquired during the training period of the university master's degree. These practices will provide the clinical application of the most relevant factors to consider as an orthopedic manual physiotherapist.

Objectives

  1. Use efficient and effective interview strategies to obtain reliable and valid patient data throughout the entire patient assessment and treatment process.
  2. Know the procedures that provide detailed information on the movements related to disorders that are amenable to intervention with OMPT.
  3. Effectively correlate the findings of the patient's history and examination, make a provisional physiotherapy diagnosis, and design a trial treatment.
  4. Develop abilities and skills in the evaluation of the patient's key symptoms and signs.
  5. Develop abilities and skills in accurately predicting expected changes and progressing towards realistic results.
  6. Conduct effective interpersonal communication to inform the patient of the risks, prognosis, potential side effects, and likely benefits of the OMPT intervention.
  7. Apply collaborative clinical reasoning with the patient, caregivers and other health professionals when defining treatment goals, interventions and measurable results.

Competences/Learning outcomes of the degree programme

Basic and general competencies:

  • CB7: To develop the skills to apply the knowledge acquired and their ability to solve problems in new or little-known environments within broader (or multidisciplinary) contexts related to their area of study.
  • CB8: To have the skills to integrate knowledge and face the complexity of formulating judgments based on information that, being incomplete or limited, includes reflections on the social and ethical responsibilities linked to the application of their knowledge and judgments.
  • CB9: To have the skills to communicate their conclusions as well as the knowledge and ultimate reasons that support them, aimed at specialized and non-specialized audiences in a clear and unambiguous way.
  • CB10: To have the ability to develop learning skills that allow them to continue studying in a way that will be largely self-directed or autonomous.
  • CG1: That students demonstrate a critical, analytical, evaluative and evidence-based clinical practice of the OMPT area of specialization.
  • CG3: Knowing how to carry out specific evaluation and treatment procedures for arthro-neuro-muscular dysfunctions, establishing a diagnosis of Orthopedic Manual Physiotherapy based on the findings.
  • CG5: That students demonstrate an advanced level of practical skills that allow a sensitive, specific and effective evaluation and treatment of arthro-neuro-muscular dysfunctions.

Transversal competencies:

  • CT1: Being able to communicate effectively and to carry out an anamnesis, an evaluation and treatment of arthro-neuro-muscular dysfunctions, in interpersonal relationships so that they lead to enhancing the health status of the patient/user and the collaboration of the multidisciplinary team.
  • CT2: Show communication skills in interpersonal relationships that lead to enhancing the health status of the patient/user and the collaboration of the multidisciplinary team.

Specific competencies:

  • CE1: To determine and apply the most appropriate treatment, taking into account the indications, contraindications, precautions and effects of Manual Orthopedic Physiotherapy in the framework of the management of pain mechanisms and dysfunctions of the arthro-neuro-muscular system.
  • CE3: Students demonstrate the ability to select the most appropriate tools and techniques in terms of reliability, validity and diagnostic accuracy for the evaluation and treatment of pain and the function of the arthro-neuro-muscular system.
  • CE4: To have the ability to specifically execute the principles of mobilization, manipulation, motor learning, exercise physiology, ergonomic strategies, among other therapeutic modalities, for the treatment of pain and function of the arthro-neuromuscular system specifically, such as multimodal elements of the therapeutic approach of Orthopedic Manual Physiotherapy.
  • CE5: Students demonstrate the ability to integrate, apply and evaluate the principles of mobilization, manipulation, motor learning, exercise physiology, ergonomic strategies, among other therapeutic modalities, as multimodal elements of the OMPT therapeutic approach.

Learning outcomes of the subject

Students will:

  • Apply collaborative clinical reasoning with the patient, caregivers, and other health professionals when defining treatment goals, interventions, and measurable outcomes.
  • Demonstrate advanced knowledge of the clinical presentation of the most typical syndromes and clinical categories of the upper extremity, as well as specific abilities and skills in their evaluation and treatment.

Syllabus

It is an integrating subject, in which the student must fully activate all their technical-professional and scientific resources acquired so far in their training process.

Students will perform professional practices in which the evaluation and treatment of patients are included.

This dynamic will be facilitated and supervised by physiotherapists trained in OMPT, who will control that the students carry out in a progressive and responsible manner, and from least to greatest difficulty, with autonomy, the different activities of the clinical field in different pathologies and patients: observe clinically, inquire , obtain information in a real environment, carry out a manual and instrumental exploratory assessment, interpret the results of the examination, prepare clinical documents, analyze and systematize the information obtained, reason clinically, order and prioritize significant findings, recognize and integrate information and documentation clinical and prescription of other health professionals, recognize functional priorities and prescriptions of professional clinical specialists, recognize and assume limitations of physiotherapeutic procedures and methods, recognize and assume treatment programs, propose specific protocols, apply treatments. Therefore, recognize and use guidelines, programs and rules of clinical practice, propose educational and preventive measures, as well as recognize and identify the undesirable effects of therapy.

At the end of the subject, students must present and debate a clinical case in the context of the clinical sessions.

Teaching and learning activities

In person



  • MCP (Mentores Clinical Practice): Clinical practices are carried out using real patients in the classroom, and allow the incorporation of professional values, care communication skills, clinical reasoning, clinical management and critical judgment, integrating all the knowledge, skills and attitudes of OMPT into professional practice. The master's professors facilitate and supervise the teaching-learning process, in this case transferred to the clinical field.
  • SLA (Self-learning activities): These activities are designed so that the student solves problems on their own with the help of the material provided and the information from the face-to-face activities and/or available in the virtual environment in which the online subjects are developed.
  • SIS (Student Independent Study): It is a process aimed at the formation of an autonomous student capable of learning to learn; It consists of developing study skills, establishing educational goals and objectives based on the recognition of the weaknesses and strengths of the individual, which will respond to the needs and expectations of each one. It implies the possibility that each student makes their own decisions in relation to the organization of their time and their learning pace, which is why it requires a high degree of responsibility to make the most of resources. Includes study of contents related to "theoretical classes" and "practices" (studying exams, carrying out individual and group theoretical work, library work, complementary reading, etc.).
  • CL (Cooperative learning): Development of active and significant learning cooperatively.
  • CS (Case studies): Acquisition of learning through the analysis of clinical cases or those of the profession, real or simulated.

  • Clinical evaluation: 70%
  • Narrative report: 30%

The grading system will be used in accordance with current legislation.

  • 0-4,9 Fail.
  • 5,0-6,9 Pass.
  • 7,0-8,9 Notable.
  • 9,0-10 Outstanding.

The Honor Roll mention may be awarded to students who have obtained a grade equal to or greater than 9.0. Their number may not exceed 5% of the students enrolled in a subject in the corresponding academic year, unless the number of students enrolled is less than 20, in which case a single Honors may be awarded.
