Introduction

The master's thesis involves being able to design, plan and apply the most efficient orthopedic manual physiotherapy intervention using scientific evidence. The skills that are acquired in the master, together with the formulation of questions, allow the intervention in orthopedic manual physiotherapy to be defended with clear arguments and justifications. This implies the integration of the contents received that are reflected in the realization of a research project.

Pre-course requirements

To be able to defend the final master's project, it is an essential requirement to have completed the rest of the subjects.

Objectives

  1. Demonstrate the ability to integrate the learning outcomes acquired with the completion of a research project.
  2. Acquire skill in approaching issues, problems, data collection and analysis techniques.
  3. Know and identify several studies of the same type and with a common objective, following a specific methodology to know how to combine the results of the studies and obtain global measurement parameters through a set of statistical techniques.
  4. Being able to carry out research work with the use of methodological resources for the teaching-learning of orthopedic manual physiotherapy under the criteria of Evidence-Based Physiotherapy.

Competences/Learning outcomes of the degree programme

Basic and general competencies:

  • CB6: Have knowledge that provides a foundation or opportunity to be original in the development and/or application of ideas, often in a research context.
  • CB7: To develop the skills to apply the knowledge acquired and their ability to solve problems in new or little-known environments within broader (or multidisciplinary) contexts related to their area of study.
  • CB8: To have the skills to integrate knowledge and face the complexity of formulating judgments based on information that, being incomplete or limited, includes reflections on the social and ethical responsibilities linked to the application of their knowledge and judgments.
  • CB9: To have the skills to communicate their conclusions as well as the knowledge and ultimate reasons that support them, aimed at specialized and non-specialized audiences in a clear and unambiguous way.
  • CB10: To have the ability to develop learning skills that allow them to continue studying in a way that will be largely self-directed or autonomous.
  • CG4: Plan and develop the analytical application of the research process in the area of specialization of Orthopedic Manual Physiotherapy.
  • CG5: That students demonstrate an advanced level of practical skills that allow a sensitive, specific and effective evaluation and treatment of arthro-neuro-muscular dysfunctions.

Transversal competencies:

  • CT2: Knowing how to handle the tools related to information and communication technologies, as well as their effective application, to ensure permanent professional updating and action based on scientific evidence, in the exercise of the profession.
 

Specific competencies:

  • CE6: Being able to determine the quantitative and qualitative tools and methods necessary to design and develop a research study in the field of Orthopedic Manual Physiotherapy.

Learning outcomes of the subject

Students:

  • Integrate all the learning results acquired with the completion of this master's degree.
  • Who carry out a Research Project, are capable of proposing a work plan: theme, problems, data collection and analysis techniques.
  • Who perform a Systematic Review, systematically identify and evaluate several studies of the same type and with a common objective, following a specific methodology; and know how to combine the results of the studies to obtain global measurement parameters through a set of statistical techniques.
  • Who prepare a Clinical Practice Guideline, are capable of preparing guidelines systematically and following the procedures of Evidence-Based Physiotherapy within the framework of the OMPT.
  • Carry out and present the results of an original research work or carry out and present a teaching project in which he argues the use of methodological resources for the teaching-learning of the OMPT under the criteria of Evidence-Based Physiotherapy.

Syllabus

The Master's Thesis (TFM) will include the preparation, written presentation and public defense before a court of the work done by the student. Therefore, papers on all topics related to the Master's training curriculum will be accepted.

The student can carry out a research project, a systematic review or a Clinical Practice Guide. According to each of the different studies, the content of this module will be established in three stages:

  1. Planning stage of the TFM: Period of time where the student and the assigned tutor establish the planning of the TFM.
  2. Stage of development: Period in which the student prepares the TFM and the corresponding mentoring sessions are carried out.
  3. Stage of oral presentation and defense: Preparation period for the presentation and defense of the questions.

The TFM must contain the different sections, adapting them to the type of study carried out (see document TFM Script of the moodle of this same subject).

The mentoring sessions with the student will be carried out online.  As for the presentation and defense of the TFM, it will be carried out in an online format.

The evaluation system will have a training component that will consist of making a portfolio in which the student will gather the evidence of their learning and improvement and the return documents from the tutor-director in the virtual and personal follow-up. The student must upload the different deliverables for the portfolio in the moodle section of the same subject. This evaluation is due to the purpose of establishing a filter by the tutor, prior to the presentation of the work, it will mean 60% of the TFM grade.

The works, finally, will be evaluated by a university court, as indicated in ROYAL DECREE 1393/2007, of October 29, which establishes the organization of official university education. The assessment that the court makes of the work and its presentation will account for 40% of the TFM grade.

It will be an essential requirement for the approval of the subject that the students have the approval of their tutor (minimum grade: a 6) and of the court (minimum grade: a 5) that values their work, from here the weighted average will be made, taking into account the aforementioned percentages.

The student will have two calls for the delivery and subsequent defense of the TFM.

The court will be appointed by the Scientific Commission of the Degree. This must be made up of three members (president, secretary and member) of which a minimum of two will be professors of the Master.

It is the function of this commission, among others, to make public the list of the final degree works accepted for the defense, to make the court proposal, dates, times and place of these. It is the function of the tutor or tutors of the work to determine the suitability of the TFM to be defended in court.
