Introduction
We define a critical patient as a patient who has an acute illness or is in a phase of exacerbation of a disease considered chronic and who manifests signs and symptoms that globally generate a maximum response from the patient's body, leading to a situation of risk.
We can find this type of patient in a wide group of populations, such as from childhood patients to elderly patients, and on the other hand, we can find them from different origins or causes. The focus of attention occurs in the intensive care unit, in which semiology, invasive or non-invasive mechanical ventilation and physiotherapeutic intervention are of fundamental importance.
The aim of this course is to provide the student with comprehensive training from a theoretical point of view of the different aspects that can be found when dealing with patients in critical condition, in the acute or chronic phase, as well as to train the skills that allow a physiotherapeutic approach for prevention and treatment.

There are no previous requirements.
Objectives
• To know the different population groups in which we can find critically ill patients.
• To know the procedures for the prevention of respiratory complications in critically ill patients and their treatment.
• To establish physiotherapeutic interventions for the treatment of the critical or semi-critical patients.
• To know the guidelines and/or protocols related to semiology, oxygen therapy and artificial ventilation in the intensive care unit.
• To know the main populations in which we can find critical patients and what should be the role of physiotherapy.

Learning outcomes of the subject
With the acquired knowledge, the student will be able to evaluate the most frequent functional alterations in critical patients, including complementary exams such as chest X-ray and arterial gasometry.
It will also bring you to know the most frequent pathologies and disorders that affect critical patients and their prognosis, as well as the goals and the therapeutic approach from physiotherapy.
Know the basic principles of oxygen therapy, non-invasive mechanical ventilation and invasive mechanical ventilation.
Finally, will get to know the limits of its performance and the importance of work in team with other professionals in an intensive care unit.

2. Determination of the main deficiencies and disabilities present in the different populations of critical patients and areas of action.
3. Evaluation and approach to the critical patient in the Intensive Care Unit

6. Invasive mechanical ventilation
7. Skills and Procedures in the critical patient. Physiotherapeutic treatment in the intensive care unit.
Teaching and learning activities
In person
This discipline will be held mainly in pearson, with classes at the University classrooms, conducting theoretical and practical seminars. The methodology used will be the lecture, cooperative learning and the resolution of exercises and problems proposed in class.
The student must carry out self-learning activities. The methodology used will be the learning contract in order to develop the student's autonomous learning.
Independent study from students will be carried out in a non-face-to-face way.

The final mark for this course will consist of the marks earned from the activities described below:
Evaluation Method
WORK IN GROUPS (40%):
1. Delivery of a theoretical activity regarding the early mobilization of critical patients.
2. Delivery of a document resulting from group work in relation to interventions in a critical patient's own pathology.
CONTINUOUS EVALUATION (10%):
Carrying out the activities planned during the classes and active participation in class.
FINAL EXAM (50%):
Test of 30 to 50 multiple choice questions.
The grading system is in accordance with the current regulations. Currently, according to RD 1125/2003 of September 5.
0 to 4.9: Fail/F (Suspenso in Spanish)
5.0 to 6.9: Pass/C (Aprobado in Spanish).
7.0 to 8.9: B (Notable in Spanish)
9.0 to 10: A (Sobresaliente in Spanish)
