Introduction

The course is focused on the different assessment methods that can be carried out in the monitoring of a therapeutic process in physiotherapy. These assessment methods focus on the control and monitoring of the different injury risk factors that may have greater relevance depending on the type of injury and the injured person. Among these factors, the intrinsic factors with a neuromuscular component are the most developed, as they are the most important in the recovery process.

In addition, the subject incorporates an important link with the technological field, since the measuring devices (including some applications) will lead us to the understanding of different technical issues and the processing of data corresponding to different parameters evaluated.

Objectives

  • To understand the relationship between injury risk factors and the assessments necessary to control and monitor them.
  • To know all the benefits of the assessments to facilitate and give an optimal quality to the physiotherapist's decision making.
  • To learn how to perform the necessary assessments to optimize the control of a therapeutic process.
  • To understand the assessment methodology used in the different publications related to physiotherapy treatments.

 

Learning outcomes of the subject

  • Competence in the analysis of the most important risk factors in an injury and the assessment needs to control them.
  • Ability to create new assessments or variations of existing ones to adjust them to the needs of a recovery process.
  • Ability to differentiate between assessments that represent different degrees of specificity with respect to sport or work gestures.
  • Ability for critical reading related to the assessments described in different times of publication.
  • Competence to make better decisions in a therapeutic process based on the results obtained from the different types of assessment used.

Syllabus

  1. Introduction to the different assessment methods.
  2. List of the most commonly used neuromuscular risk factors in the assessment of a therapeutic process.
  3. Classification of the assessments according to the specificity of the gestures to be evaluated.
  4. Kinematic assessment of motor skills and analytical movements. Variables to be analyzed.
  5. Assessment of ground reaction forces by means of force platforms. Variables to be analyzed.
  6. Assessment of muscle activity by means of surface electromyography. Variables to be analyzed.
  7. Assessment of injury risk factors by means of different cell phone applications.
  8. Assessment of muscle strength and power using encoders. Variables to be analyzed.

Evaluation systems and criteria

The evaluation will consist of the following sections:

Continuous evaluation:

- Class work and/or exercises and autonomous work: 20% (averages whatever the grade is). It cannot be recovered.

- Projects: 40% (must be passed with at least a 5 to be evaluated). Cannot be recovered.

- Exam: 40% (must pass with at least a 4.5 to be evaluated). Cannot be recovered.

Final evaluation:

- Final evaluation exam with all the contents of the course (a score of 5 must be obtained to pass the course).

Attendance to all the practical sessions is compulsory. Attendance is not compulsory in theory sessions where there is no practical content.
