Introduction

Theoretical contents:

This block is intended that students acquire knowledge of a series of tools that allow them to establish a good foundation in order to understand Physiotherapy.

Theoretical and practical seminar:

Bearing in mind the role of the physiotherapist in the health care setting, it is essential that students have first practical contact from the beginning of their training. This seminar provides students with the theoretical and practical knowledge necessary to the development of technical and manual skills, which will be the basis for further development of other, more specific studies that students will acquire throughout the course of their degree.

Pre-course requirements

No prerequisites have been determined for this subject.

Objectives

Objectives

Theoretical content:

Introduce students to some of the tools available with which they will be able to apply to their profession.

Theoretical and practical seminar:

Provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary for basic maneuvers to perform massage therapy in different anatomical areas.

Correctly apply appropriate maneuvers depending on the pathology in question.

Learning outcomes of the subject

At the end of the course the student will achieve the following learning outcomes:

- Understand the theoretical and physiological bases of massage therapy.

- Have the skills to properly apply the different techniques of

massage therapy in the musculoskeletal system.

- Understand the theoretical foundations and the physiological bases which diplay therapeutic effects in the following Physiotherapeutic procedures: pressotherapy, hydrotherapy, balneotherapy, thalassotherapy, climatotherapy, thermotherapy and cryotherapy.

- Design procedures and formulate objectives of intervention, related to the procedures described in the presentations of clinical cases.

- Understand the importance of patient adherence to therapeutic intervention as well as the need to encourage their participation in the development of the objectives and processes of recovery.

- Maintain an attitude of motivation and improvement in the learning process.

Teaching and learning activities

In person

Theoretical classes:

Master lectures or presentation methods will be used to complete the theoretical contents and will be reinforced with Case Methods and problem solving exercises. Students will use the independent study and assessment room, which is where they will present their discussions and outcomes of different cases.

Theoretical and practical seminar:

Through problem-solving exercises and problem-based learning, students will acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to execute the various massage therapy maneuvers correctly when applying the aforementioned Physiotherapy tools.

Evaluation systems and criteria

In person

The following procedures are considered for the evaluation of the subject:

Theoretical part (first semester): 60% of the final grade.

Part 1 (30%): Syllabus taught by Dr. Laura Pacheco. 7 sessions, the last session will be the partial test (10% out of 30%).

Part 2 (30%) given by Dr. Aïda Cadellans, 7  sessions, the last session will be the partial test (10% over 30%).
Final evaluation of the theoretical part. Test exam 40 questions (correct 0,4 incorrect 0,1) during the exam week.

Pass mark =5

Practical part (second semester): 40% of the final grade.

Taught by Professor Laura Garcia.

Final practical exam (40%) acquired in the practical seminar of massotherapy.

General criteria.

In order to obtain the average grade, the theoretical and practical parts must be passed independently, with a 5 for each block.

In the 2nd call the failed student will take the exam of the failed part (theoretical or practical), must be passed with a 5.

In case of failing the second exam, the grade will not be kept and the student will have to take the whole course again.

Attendance regulations

The main objective of the subjects of the Degree in Physiotherapy that present theoretical-practical contents is the acquisition and development of procedures and technical skills directly related to the practical practice of the profession. This is the reason that determines the structure of these classes, in small groups with the direct and continuous supervision of the professor of the subject. For this reason, attendance to the seminars is considered fundamental and necessary to ensure the acquisition of these competences. Based on the above, absences may only occur in exceptional cases due to major causes and, under any circumstances, if they exceed 30% of the course load, the student will be obliged to re-enroll in this subject in the following academic year, without the possibility of exams in the second call. The consequences of non-compliance with these regulations may have very negative effects directly related to the enrollment process (overlapping and/or academic incompatibilities), and with the corresponding time forecast for the completion of the studies of the Degree.
