Introduction

The aim of the Construction 7 course is to support students in developing their Final Degree Project (FDP), providing the necessary material and technical definition to the project. The FDP project demonstrates the skills that have been assimilated during the course.

Knowledge of materials, products, building systems, the structural concept underlying the proposal, the optimization of technical-conditioning systems… ultimately, the true material nature of the project should be understood as one of the main objectives of the course.

Pre-course requirements

Students should have passed all the subjects of Construction, Structural Calculation and M&E engineering of previous courses, although ultimately the Managing Board of ESARQ is responsible for defining the criteria of compatibility between different subjects.

Objectives

The objective of this course is to support and advise students during the preparation of their Final Degree Project (FDP).

This guidance entails reviewing and enlarging upon knowledge related to the building structure and its coherence with the general construction systems of the project, preparing the relevant graphic documentation and ensuring that the whole project is synchronous with the decisions taken during the planning process.

Competences/Learning outcomes of the degree programme

  • 12-T - Ability to conceive, calculate, design, integrate in buildings and urban complexes and execute building structures
  • 13-T - Ability to conceive, calculate, design, integrate in buildings and urban complexes, and execute interior partition systems, carpentry, staircases and other finished works.
  • 14-T - Ability to conceive, calculate, design, integrate in buildings and urban complexes and execute enclosure systems, roofs and other structural work
  • 15-T - Ability to conceive, calculate, design, integrate in buildings and urban complexes and execute foundation solutions
  • 25 - To acquire adequate knowledge of conventional building systems and their pathology

Learning outcomes of the subject

The learning outcomes should be manifested in the Final Degree Project. This should clearly reflect all the processes related to the materiality, construction systems used, the structure and the technical conditioning of the project.

Syllabus

TOPIC 1 CONTACT WITH THE LAND

Earth movements. Existing and modified topography. Earth retaining and foundation structures. Timeline of construction processes. Consistency between foundation systems and the structure of the project. Impact on the natural and built environment.

TOPIC 2 STRUCTURE

Checking and validating the structural hypothesis. Consistency between the type of structure and its materiality. Compatibility between the structure and the general building systems of the project. The construction of the structure.

TOPIC 3 ENCLOSURES

Compatibility between the structure and its enclosures. Validation of the proposed structural enclosure system with regard to aspects such as air and water tightness and acoustic and thermal insulation.

TOPIC 4 TECHNICAL CONDITIONING AND INTERIOR COMPARTMENTALIZATION

Energy efficiency of the structure’s enclosures. Validation of exterior joinery and glazed elements.

TOPIC 5 THE DETAIL OF THE PROJECT

Definition of the project on a detailed scale.

Selection of the most representative and defining elements of the material features of the project: joinery and/or locksmith work, vertical communication, staircases, special furnishings, wet zones, etc.

Teaching and learning activities

In person

The course is organized into 5 themed blocks to be given successively. Each topic will be dealt with as a group in each session, using the student’s own work as a basis. Theoretical explanations will be given during the sessions along with talks on practical examples related to the course project.
The support documentation from the students for the working sessions should be handed in to the professor one week ahead and always in digital format.
At the end of the course, students should submit a document containing all the documents used during the course with the relevant corrections resulting from the themed sessions.

Evaluation systems and criteria

In person

Bibliography and resources

The bibliography for reference purposes is the one specified throughout the degree course for the different technical assignments. Reference to specific reading lists may also be recommended in accordance with the work of each student.
