Introduction

In the event that the health authorities announce a new period of confinement due to the evolution of the health crisis caused by COVID-19, the teaching staff will promptly communicate how this may effect the teaching methodologies and activities as well as the assessment.

The aim of this program is to improve student competence when reading and analyzing research reports and research papers.

With such objectives, we will develop skills for the analysis and interpretation of research articles and reports. We will work on reading skills to strengthen and encourage scientific communication in academic settings.

The program consists of three parts: masterclasses, readings, and group work.

The masterclasses focus on research and methodology concepts needed to understand the results of research and oral comprehension in Health research. In these sessions, we will look into research designs and results.

Readings will focus on acquiring the autonomy to learn from published research results.

Group work aims to develop oral expression and analysis with the aim of improving communication in an academic environment and in conferences.

Pre-course requirements

Recommended minimum level of English at the start of the course is B1+

Objectives

Master class:

- Preparing and training students on research design and interpretation with new research concepts.

- Strengthening comprehension and development of productive skills of oral and written expression.

- Provide the necessary content to understand, use, interpret and comment on medical research projects.

Readings:

- Reinforcing the student's understanding of health research by reading and analyzing studies, and structuring main and secondary messages, as well as learning models for literature management

Group work:

- Working on scientific communication in an oral format, as well as on communication skills and presentation of scientific results. Study in-depth specific research designs.

Competences/Learning outcomes of the degree programme

Based on the use of the competency from the Medical degree programme, students will be able:

To have sufficient knowledge of English to understand medical and health sciences literature in English, as well as a sufficient level of oral comprehension to be able to attend and participate in a talk or lecture.

  • 31 - Understand, critically evaluate and know how to use sources of clinical and biomedical information to obtain, organize, interpret and communicate scientific and health care information.
  • 34 - Ability for critical thinking, creativity and constructive skeptisim with a focus on research within professional practice.
  • 37 - Acquire basic training for research.
  • CB-6 - To have developed sufficient autonomy to participate in research projects and scientific or technological cooperation within the student’s own thematic and interdisciplinary context. This should also include a high degree of knowledge transfer.
  • CTI-1 - To know how to communicate effectively through written and oral communication in a foreign language that will allow them to work in an international context.
  • CTP-3 - To develop critical thinking and reasoning as well as self-assessment skills.

Learning outcomes of the subject

Students will be able:

1.    To be able to read and understand health research designs, as well as medical and healht scientific literature in English

2.    To be able to understand main ideas in talks and lectures

3.    To be able to participate in a talk or lecture in English

Syllabus

Topics:

Students will cover topics related to the evidence-based approach to medicine as well as areas of most immediate relevance to research in health research.

Discipline-specific Language Skills

Students will learn to read, understand and discuss academic literature related to medicine and health research. Furthermore, they will learn to recognize main features and the common format of research articles. They will develop synthesis skills of material covered throughout the course.

Language Knowledge:

Instruction of this component is dependent on the students' language level. Students will revise/consolidate knowledge about professional and academic discourse related to health sciences research, the organization of information provided in scientific articles, and citation of sources.

Teaching and learning activities

Online

Students will become actively engaged in the process of reading, analyzing and synthesizing information from a variety of academic genres specific to Medicine, such as extracts from textbooks and medical journals. Students will discuss course contents in collaborative tasks. They will give presentations as well as produce some writing assignments. Listening activities will comprise listening for general and specific information given in lectures by a professor and presentations by other students and online speakers.

The Internet will also serve as a source for language tools and material which students can apply throughout their overall learning process. These materials will further form an integral part of the students’ self-study, thus equipping and motivating students for the life-long learning of English related to their field.

Important information

Attendance and participation Students are reminded that attendance and participation in class, as well as continuous assessment, are essential requirements to pass the subject. Passing the course involves solving 80% of classroom quizzes. Quizzes will not be reviewed.

The student who does not take a quiz will receive a 0 in that exercise. However, each test has little individual weight in the final evaluation of the course, so the non-completion of an individual quiz will have a small effect on the final grade. Students who are missing a session for justified reasons must present justify their absence by the session.

Second call

The second call will consist of an exam, which may contain a written component and/or an oral presentation.

The student must confirm assistance to the second call with the coordinator of the course. They will be obliged to make an appointment at least one month before the date of this exam to receive information regarding the exam session.
