Risk behaviours are active or passive actions involving a danger to the welfare of the individual. These behaviours entail negative consequences for health and also endanger development aspects of the person. The intervention against risk behaviours is very important and needs to developed efficiently by our health system. Nursing professionals, as a group directly involved in promoting and ensuring the health of the population, have a significant and strategic role identifying cases, preventing and treating any health damaging behaviour.
This course aims to provide students theoretical knowledge about risk behaviours of our society and understand how these behaviours can get out of control and even end up turning into addictions. Therefore, this course's intention is to provide students with knowledge to understand, prevent and deal with risk behaviours and prevents addictions. The additions that can be generated (such as drug dependence, pathological gambling, emerging addictions such as Internet addiction, compulsive shopping, workaholics, and eating disorder) will also be discussed.

Objectives
- To describe the theoretical knowledge basis about the development of risk behaviours and addictions.
- To show the major risk factors that favours the development of addictive behaviours.
- To present the main lines of treatment and resources available for patients with addictions.
- To recognize the role of community nurses in this area and their contribution to patient, family, and community.
- To learn how to focus and properly plan the nursing care plan of the patient at risk.
- To introduce the different existing programmes operation in Cataluña to treat or prevent risky behaviours.
Competences/Learning outcomes of the degree programme
- 1. G - Ability to provide technical and professional health care appropriate to the health needs of the people they treat, with full technical and scientific autonomy, according to current and available scientific knowledge and to the quality standards and safety requirements set forth in the applicable legal standards and code of ethics.
- 2. E - Plan and provide nursing care for individuals or groups, taking health outcomes into account and their impact, through guidelines for clinical practice and care, which describe the four processes by which a health problem is diagnosed or treated.
- 3. E - Know and apply the theoretical and methodological foundations and principals of nursing.
- 4. B - Understand the interactive behavior of the person according to their gender, group or community, within their social and multicultural context.
- 5. G - Design systems of care programed for people or groups, assessing their impact and making necessary modifications.
- 6. E - Base nursing care on scientific evidence and available resources.
- 7. B - Understand people without prejudice, considering their physical, psychological and social aspects, as autonomous and independent individuals, ensuring respect for their opinions, beliefs and values, ensuring their right to privacy through confidentiality and professional secrecy.
- 8. B - Promote and respect the right of participation, information, autonomy and informed consent in decision-making of people treated, according to the way they live their health - disease process..
Learning outcomes of the subject
At the end of the course, the student should be able to:
- Reaching the basis of existing theoretical knowledge about the development of risk behaviours and addictions.
- Know and identify the types of risk factors that lead to developing addictive behaviours.
- Know the main lines of treatment and available resources to cover the problems involved in any addiction.
- Acquire and carry out the proper role of community nursing in this issue, from a holistic perspective of the person.
- Focus and properly plan the nursing care plan of the patient at risk.
- Know the existence and purpose of specific programmes operating in Cataluña to treat or prevent risky behaviours.

Teaching and learning activities
In person
The methodologies used are the following:
1. Lectures: explanatory sessions of theoretical content with graphic-audiovisual support by the teacher. At the same time student participation will be encouraged through open questions that allow the strengthening of the student's knowledge. During the lectures the main topics and concepts of the detailed subjects syllabus will be deeply exposed.
2. Group work: Each group prepares the contents of a Unit and will have to expose it in class and carry out an activity related to it.
3. Readings, film viewing and discussion: The main objective is to work the subject content through different sources of information and create spaces for exchanging opinions using real situations that trigger reflection and thinking.
Classes are taught in person. In the event that there are students who cannot attend for reasons derived from COVID19, the teacher will do the classes in BLENDED format, where the whole group will be in the classroom and the Moodle Collaborate will be used at the same time for those who cannot attend .
Evaluation systems and criteria
In person
First assessment:
- 50% Continuous assessment including class work, group work and oral presentation.
- 50% Final exam. It is mandatory to pass the final exam to do the average mark
First resit A written exam will take place. Continuous assessment will be kept.
