Introduction

International Cooperation in Health (3 ECTS) is a common subject of the Community (Society and Health) specialization. This subject is an introduction to development cooperation projects from a nursing perspective. How can a nurse participate in all stages? The Department of Nursing in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences has agreed that it is compulsory for all students taking a Bachelor's degree in Nursing, when participating in online classes, to turn on their camera and remain visible to lecturers and professors at all times

If there are students in self-isolation due to the COVID-19 health and safety measures, who cannot physically attend class at the University like their peers, teaching staff will carry out online teaching during this isolation period only so that the student(s) in question can attend their classes online. The rest of the students will have to attend their classes in person in the classroom.

Objectives

  1. Reflect on the impact that a help relationship can have on people who have experienced situations of disadvantage.

  2. Provide tools to plan and prepare a cooperation for the development project in all its phases.

Learning outcomes of the subject

After completing the International Cooperation in Health course, students will be able to:

  • Identify environmental and social factors that influence health.                      
  • Valorar la importancia de la alimentación y sus riesgos.                             
  • Conocer la importancia de la relación entre la salud, urbanismo, vivienda y entorno.
  • Understand the city as a more social and ecological human place.   
  • Elaborate care plans, incorporating elements of the cultural context of the user within Code of Ethics for Nurses.
  • Propose strategies to empower people and communities.
  • Recognize health promotion and health education as fundamental tools in order to encourage individuals and communities to maintain and especially to improve their state of health. 
  • Understand the principles that determine behaviours related to health, maintenance, retention and modification. 
  • Plan, design, implement and evaluate health programmes aimed at the community. Identify action strategies for health promotion.
  • Identify the different health agents within the community.
  • Recognize the different cultures living in our society.

Syllabus

  • How to develop a Cooperation Project: stages of the project design. Projects examples in Africa; Latin America; India; etc.
  • Get to know the field: how to make health diagnosis. Evaluation of the health status of the Community. Working with leaders, community agents.
  • Seminars and workshops about: training health workers; sessions for parents; workshops for children in schools; health literacy; home visits; health care; prevention workshops.
  • Resilience and help relationship in disadvantaged situations
  • Request for institutional aid for development cooperation projects.

Teaching and learning activities

In person



  • Classes will be done in the presencial modality. In case there are students who cannot attend for reasons derived from COVID19, the teacher will do the classes in BLENDED format, where the whole group will be in the classroom and at the same time the Collaborate will be used for those who cannot attend.

  • Methodology will be varied, generally having one session focus on the professor exposition and others focused on exercises in the classroom. Among other activities there will be workshops, seminars (photography, video, etc.), discussions, role-playing, etc. In addition, participants will be invited in cooperation projects of an international scope

Evaluation systems and criteria

In person



There will be continuous assessment will that will take into consideration the following:

  • Participation and exercises in class: 20% (throughout the course):

- Class attendance: 5%
- Delivery (group) (5%): presentation of the NGO, beneficiaries and problem tree

- Delivery (group) (5%): group work, from the beginning to the end of the logical framework matrix

- Delivery (group) (5%): exercise in class with presentations

  • Cooperation project, in groups 60% (written work (45% of the work grade) and presentation of 15-20 minutes (15% of the work grade):
  • Peer evaluation (5%): group evaluation questionnaires (from the cooperation project group)
  • Exercise on resilience and helping relationship (15%) (individual)

In the first resit the results of the ongoing evaluation will be taken into account. The mark obtained for participation and class exercises is not taken into account in first resit assessment. All the exercises that have been failed must be retaken.

For the second and third resit the same criteria applies as for the first and second.

 Before enrolling again in the subject please check compatibility with other subjects.

 Honors will not be awarded in the first resit.
