Introduction

The relationship between periodontics and dental implants is very narrow and widely studied.

At present, the implant treatment is focused as interdisciplinary , respecting the principles and recommendations of the different specialties of dentistry.
Knowledge and critic evaluation of different periodontal factors that can interfere with the implant tratmient is essential.

Pre-course requirements

  The student must have passed the clinical practices of the 1st and 2nd year.
Besides the theoretical subjects  Advanced Periodontology and Classic and Advanced Review of the literature.

Objectives

  By the end of the seminar the student will be able to :

  • To recognize the main considering factors in Periodontics-Implant treatment.
  • Recognize the main risk factors related to periodontal - Implants treatment.
  • Perform a logical analysis of the periodontal prognosis of their patients and how this might influence the implant treatment

Competences/Learning outcomes of the degree programme

 

  1. Comprehensive knowledge of the periimplant mucosa anatomy, this including the periimplant mucosa probing, and the dimensions of the papilla between implants and teeth, and between implants themselves.
  2. Comprehensive knowledge of the periimplant infection microbiology.
  3. Comprehensive knowledge of the occlusal trauma effects upon the periimplant tissues.
  4. Comprehensive knowledge of the periimplant mucositis and periimplantitis. Knowledge of the possible risk factors to develope periimplantitis and the possible mechanisms to susceptibility in periimplantitis.
  5. Comprehensive knowledge of the Implant treatment planning in the periodontal patient.
  6. Comprehensive knowledge of the periimplant lesion treatment options. Knowledge of the reosseointegration phenomenon.
  7. Comprehensive knowledge of the mucogingival periimplant surgical procedures.

Learning outcomes of the subject

The student will be able to implement the studied objectives under different clinical situations, identifying the characteristics and specific needs of each case .

Syllabus

The course is developed on the basis of clinical presentation to be treated by students, must submit a complete treatment plan and possible risk factors associated cases.

Teaching and learning activities

In person



Each week a student must present at least one finished case treated in the university clinic. Characteristics and pre-treatment conditions, surgical technique and results will be discussed. All  possible interactions with other areas will aso be discussed.
