Introduction

Periodontal plastic surgery can be defined as “surgical procedures performed to prevent or correct anatomic, developmental, traumatic or disease induced defects of the gingiva, alveolar mucosa or bone”.

 

The aim of this hands-on is to provide students theoretical and practical knowledge about the surgical procedures used to correct mucogingival defects and problems. 

Pre-course requirements

Theoretical knowledge about the diagnosis and treatment of mucogingival defects and problems. 

Objectives

Graduates should be able to:

 Apply the various surgical treatment options and techniques to correct mucogingival defects and problems, in different clinical situations.

Competences/Learning outcomes of the degree programme

Proficiency in diagnosing abnormalities in the anatomy and morphology of periodontal and oral
 mucosal tissues that may compromise periodontal health, function or aesthetics, identifying the conditions, which may require management.

Proficiency in determining a patient’s aesthetic requirements and determining the degree to which those requirements/desires can be met. 

Learning outcomes of the subject

Graduates must:

Be familiar with the management of soft tissue and surgical anatomy.

Identify the use and application of each surgical instrument to the various steps of each technique.

Be able to make a proper diagnosis and treatment plan and carry out step by step the different surgical procedures for the treatment of mucogingival problems.

Syllabus

  1. Anatomical concepts.
  2. Surgical indications and contraindications.
  3. Surgical techniques (flaps and sutures)
  4. Types of grafts/ materials
  5. Postsurgical care.
  6. Intraoperative and postsurgical complications.

Teaching and learning activities

In person



Surgical techniques workshop through practice step by step.

Practice will be held in pig heads and  surgical and microsurgical instruments and sutures  will be available.
