Introduction

This course proposes to go intensely into the knowledge of materials and products related to the different systems of dry construction and to understand the natural qualities of the materials involved in these processes, their transformations, production of components and changes in manufacturing in order to generate new construction systems.

This is to introduce students to the knowledge of building systems through the responses and the development of basic materials, products and their application on site.

Pre-course requirements

It is recommended to have passed the different Construction courses previous to Construction 5, although it is the Board of Directors of ESARQ that defines the criteria for enrollment incompatibility between subjects.

Objectives

The basic goal is that students understand that constructive systems have to be evaluated in terms of efficiency, yield and risk, and that this is the attitude that guarantees the control of the appropriateness of constructive decisions.

The course is based on the intense study of the life cycle of the materials involved in dry construction. We will study aspects related to their extraction, production, handling, placing, maintenance and recycling.

Competences/Learning outcomes of the degree programme

  • 13-T - Ability to conceive, calculate, design, integrate in buildings and urban complexes, and execute interior partition systems, carpentry, staircases and other finished works.
  • 14-T - Ability to conceive, calculate, design, integrate in buildings and urban complexes and execute enclosure systems, roofs and other structural work
  • 17 - Ability to apply building and technical standards
  • 19 - Ability to preserve finished works.
  • 21 - Ability to preserve structural works
  • 26 - To acquire adequate knowledge of physical and chemical characteristics, production processes, pathology and the use of construction materials
  • 27 - To acquire adequate knowledge of industrialised building systems.

Learning outcomes of the subject

The result of the completion of the course must be the ability to design architectural elements based on the knowledge of materials and systems applied in dry construction.

Teaching and learning activities

In person

Theoretical Content: There will be lectures where the theoretical syllabus of the course will be developed, with direct application to student projects.

Practical Content: Class with an explanation of studies of practical cases and projects. A series of weekly interim submissions of the project is established where the student must reflect on the demands of each case. The following week all the documents previously handed in will be corrected. At the end of the course the student will have to submit the final version of the project including all the parts previously delivered and corrected.

Evaluation systems and criteria

In person

The evaluation system will be on the basis of how well the student has followed the course, both the theoretical and the practical parts. It is compulsory to attend both the lectures and practical sessions. To pass the course the student must attend at least 70% of the classes.

The final grade is obtained from an average of 50% of the marks from the practical exercise and 50% of the final exam marks. It is necessary to pass both the practical exercise and the exam. Marks equal or less than 3 out of 10 do not count towards the calculation of the average.
