Introduction

A journey through the evolution of the media (printing on paper, hatching image, newsreels, radio and television networks), technological developments and their influence on the modus operandi of journalists - "the medium is the message "Mc Luhan-, informative genres, the symbiosis between writing and images, construction event in each historical moment and connecting with readers or audiences.

Pre-course requirements

No prerequisites are established to take this course.

Objectives

The course is presented as a continuous assessment, alternating theory with practical exercises, putting much emphasis on the presentation of content and style of writing and speaking in class. The set must form a "work in progress" that provides the student an overview understanding of the history of journalism.

Syllabus

  1. The prehistory of journalism. XV to XVII. Newsletters, ads, "relaciones", mercuries, "corantos". The Gacette of Renaudot: the information, grant of power. The eighteenth century. Primeros diarios, Daily Courant (1702). Defoe, Addison, Steele and Swift. Nipho first Spanish journalist.
  2. Expansion of economic and morphological agencies and the press in the nineteenth century transformations. Steam, telegraph, railroad and electricity. Development of the British press. The Times. 1870-1914: Press freedom and "Belle Epoque". The Dreyfus and Emile Zola case. Popular press and tabloids. Pulitzer vs. Hearst.
  3. From the recorded picture. Illustrations, magazines, weekly and daily charts: Daily Mirror, White and Black, ABC, The Day Graph, Sphere, New World, Berliner Illustrierte, Vu, Stamps, Imatges, Chronicle ... The revolution of Leica. Photojournalism: Life, weekly chart pattern today (SGA).
  4. The informative film. The Lumiere brothers to the news. The era of totalitarianism: fascism and communism. The No-Do.
  5. The broadcasting as a "hot" media. From Goebbels to Orson Welles. History of radio in Spain. Radio Barcelona. Birth of television.
  6. The press in Spain and Catalonia in the first third of the century. Most representative diaries. The condition of journalist Nicholas M. Urgoiti, Gaziel, Josep Pla, Ramón J. Sender. Republic and Civil War. Act 1938, Daily Motion and slogans. Fraga Act of 1966. The Spain of Transition, birth and death of publications.
  7. "The era of" homo videns. Social networks. Culture or digital ignorance.

Teaching and learning activities

In person

The course takes place in 40 hours: Lectures (15), research workshops (3), projections of audiovisual documents (8), class exercises, readings and text comments, oral presentations (10) and case studies seminar. (4).

The agenda is completed with a dossier of "thematic extensions" that the student is given at the end of the course to enrich the content.

Final exam

Oral exams (7 sessions, 15, 22 and 29 October and 5, 12 and 26 November)

  • Work in groups -> 2 people
  • Exhibition of 20 minutes with pictures. Research paper folios 10-12 (except photocopies of articles, covers, summary tables ...) and 1 page summary of the above to give to classmates.
  • Every work will include index, bibliography and Memory (other) in which the division of duties will detail between the group and the time spent; location of documentary sources; difficulties in performing the work and assessment of knowledge.

Case studies

  • For Journalistic readings around a central theme. Individual work of three pages for each proposed book: Synopsis (8 lines). Review of 30 lines. Significant fragment. Arsenal lexicon. Sharing with colleagues to reach common reflections on the theme. The three groups will present their findings at a seminar to be held on December 17.
  • These Thematic extensions "enter" on the exam and complete the final grade by fifty percent.

Seminar. This activity will consist of taking an in-depth look at specific up-to-date topics in a monographic manner-in some cases these topics will have been debated socially-, via active work in small groups.

Evaluation systems and criteria

In person

The final score is the sum of the coefficient of each student in their activities during the course -Assistance, class work, exhibitions and activities monográficas- representing 50 percent and the final exam (50 percent).

Second call: Written exam on the syllabus taught during the course.
