Introduction

Theory and Practice in Physical Education is a subject in the specialisation programme of Physical Education of the degree programmes in Pre-School and Primary Education in the International University of Catalonia. The conditional capacities and physical conditioning are  one of the block of contents in the Official Curriculum established by the Department of Education of the Generalitat de Catalunya. For this reason this subject is an essential basis in the specialisation programme of Physical Education. 

Pre-course requirements

The subject Theory and Practice in Physical Education is made up of a practical part, in which active participation in class will be required, and a theoretical part, in which the contents of the subject will be combined with the contents of the current law. Therefore, a basic knowledge of this law will be required.

To be able to have a positive assessment, active participation will be essential, as well as  being involved in class and outside during term time.

Objectives

1. To know the role and the location of the basic physical qualities of human movement.

2. To know the characteristics, evolution and development of the basic physical qualities in school age.

3. To understand the basic concepts of the training process as an improvement process of the physical qualities  in the school environment.

4. To know the main training systems of the basic physical qualities which are applicable in  school.

5. To observe, analize and propose improvements in physical performance and their evolution.

6. To prevent pathologies in physical activity and to get healthy habits related to exercizing.

7. To apply the appropriate rules to promote hygiene and health in school.

8. To know different ways to improve physical condition.

9. To research in the field of education, teaching and physical education.

10. To know the basic necessary actions in first aid in school.

11.Learn to create educational resources for use in school

Competences / Learning outcomes of the degree programme

  • CEM-01 - To analyze and understand the educational processes inside and outside the classroom regarding the 6-12 age period.
  • CEM-02 - To be familiar with the basics of primary education.
  • CEM-03 - To analyze teaching practice and the institutional conditions in which it takes place.
  • CEM-04 - To be familiar with the processes of interaction and communication in the classroom.
  • CEM-05 - To be familiar with the historical development of the educational system in our country, as well as the political and legislative determinants of educational activity.

  • CG-01 - To integrate information and communication technologies in teaching and learning activities, teaching management and professional development.
  • CG-02 - To communicate clearly and correctly in the language of instruction (Catalan and Spanish), orally and in writing, in accordance with level C1 in the Common European Framework of Reference for languages (CEFR).
  • CG-03 - To be able to communicate in English at level B1, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for languages (CEFR).
  • CG-04 - To promote and facilitate attention to the unique educational needs of students, gender equality, fairness and respect for human rights, in the contexts of learning and social harmony, both in the school and in relation to the surroundings.
  • CG-09 - To be familiar with the elements that make up creativity, the different levels of proficiency and how to develop this skill as much as possible.
  • CG-10 - To be familiar with the elements that make up entrepreneurial spirit, the different levels of proficiency and how to develop this skill as much as possible.
  • CG-11 - To be familiar with the elements that make up the quality-based approach, the different levels of proficiency and how to develop this skill as much as possible.

5. To promote and facilitate contexts for the work of physical conditioning: strength, resistance, speed, flexibility and coordination.

12. To be able to plan contents in a cross-curricular way.

13. To know aspects of classroom management which are related to their teaching activity.

18. To act in an ethical and responsible way in the exercise of their duties.

19. To be aware of the last discoveries in the fields of teaching and methodology which apply to their own teaching practice.

Teaching and learning activities

In person

The subject Theory and Practice in Physical Education is made up of theoretical and practical sessions. Active participation will be required in all sessions to get the most out of the proposed contents. Throughout the sessions different ways of working will be used according to the type of contents: group discussions, lecture, bibliographical research, scientific research, teacher presentations or student presentations, individual work, group work or cooperative work.

Different teaching and learning material will be used to analize and study the contents: magazine articles, reference books, DVDs and reference websites.

Practical training sessions of physical conditioning will be done in order to improve and learn through action how to optimize the practice applying the theoretical contents to the teaching practice.

Failing to handing in a project or handing it in after the due date implies that the student will fail the subject.
