Introduction

The introduction to the knowledge of myofascial chains is essential in order to perform physical therapy based on the concepts of overall health, which is increasingly widespread in the daily practice of the physiotherapist. Addressing static disorders and their consequences requires very precise anatomical and biomechanical knowledge. In order to perform a comprehensive therapy through the rebalance myofascial chains, it is necessary to improve the capacity of posture observation, palpation of bone and muscular elements, and understand the theoretical foundations of the physiology of this system and its neuromuscular relationship. The concept of globality refers to the concept of the body unit, a necessary aspect to facilitate the recovery of balance in the body and movement. One of the main objectives will be to improve the shape and its relationship between the different body segments, with the objective to improve the altered function. In addition to its therapeutic action on the vertebral column and skeletal muscle of the limbs, postural re-education method based on Mézieères disorders has an educational and preventive vocation that allows recognition and re-harmonization of body schema.

Pre-course requirements

Not specified.

Objectives

· Transmit the theoretical knowledge and practical basics necessary for understanding the concept of Physiotherapy as a whole, and the rebalancing of posture and movement through myofascial chains.

· Introduce students within the knowledge of postural analysis and myofascial extensibility within the physiotherapeutic diagnosis. Integrate basic treatment techniques to retrain alterations of the vertebral column in the sagittal plane.

Improve the perception of the body, in order to feel and understand the experiential way in the therapeutic value of postural corrections and the importance of proprioception.

Competences / Learning outcomes of the degree programme

  • 47 - Ability to assess the patient's/client's functional status, taking into account his/her physical, psychological and social aspects.
  • 49 - Ability to design a physiotherapy treatment plan.
  • 50 - Ability to execute, direct and coordinate a physiotherapy treatment plan while attending to the client's individual needs and using therapeutic tools specific to the physiotherapy profession.
  • 51 - Ability to assess the outcomes of the physiotherapy treatment against the initial goals set and the established outcome criteria.
  • 53 - Capacity to participate within the areas of health promotion and disease prevention.
  • 01 - The ability to analysis and synthesis.
  • 02 - The ability to organise and synthesize
  • 09 - Demonstrate critical thinking skills.
  • 29.1 - Demonstrate a committment to ongoing learning and self-improvement.
  • 37.4 - Adhere to professional competencies and standards in health care
  • 43 - Knowledge of physiotherapeutic procedures based on techniques and methods specific to physiotherapy interventions applied to the various disorders of all systems and medical and surgical specialisations, as well as health promotion and disease prevention.

Learning outcomes of the subject

The student must know and understand the theoretical aspects and fundamentals of Physiotherapy as a whole and the rehabilitation of posture and movement, based on the Mezieres method.

Students have to acquire the ability to practice the techniques learned specific Physiotherapy. Also, students have to be able to make an overall assessment of posture, including the assessment of spinal curvatures, type of breathing and extensibility of myofascial chains.

Students will be able to apply the integrated knowledge within individual Physiotherapy treatment, prior to the overall postural diagnosis, with the objective of treating and preventing musculoskeletal disorders.

Syllabus

1. Analysis of posture and its alterations.

2. Analysis of the extensibility of the muscle chains.

3. Breathing and its role in posture.

4. Assessment and treatment of imbalances of the vertebral column in the sagittal plane: hyper / hypolordosis and hyper / hypokyphosis.

5. Postural alteration as a risk factor of musculoskeletal disorder.

Evaluation systems and criteria

In person

Assessment of general skills and specific proposals. The evaluation will be distributed as follows:

EVALUATION

PUNCTUATION

PRACTICAL ASSESSMENT

0 to 10 points

CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT

+1, 0, -1 (points on the practice mark)

The theoretical and practical assessment will be done on the last day of the seminar class. There will be oral theoretical answer questions and practice maneuvers. The point criteria will be based on the response and it's accuracy as well as the relevance and quality of practice done.

Within the continuous assessment students will be evaluated on self-assessment, punctuality, behavior, interest, attitude and the proper conduct of practical exercises. Points can be added, removed, or unchanged in the practical evaluation.

Self-assessment: students complete a project based on the analysis and evaluation of the posture. The information in order to carry out this work can be found on the Web. Likewise, students can access the correction and evaluation criteria of the work they have done, via searching through the internet so that students evaluate their own work.

Completion of this work will be required to pass the course.

Attendance Regulations

The subjects in the Physiotherapy Degree present theoretical and practical content in which the main objective is the acquisition and development of procedures and technical skills that are directly related to the professional practice. These classes are structed in small groups where there is direct and continuous supervision of the teacher.  Therefore, attendance to seminars is considered essential and necessary to ensure the acquisition of these skills. Based on what has been presented above, absences will only be excused to those who have missed class due to major causes and even under these circumstances, if they miss more than 20% of the training work, students will have to retake the subject in the next academic year, without the possibility of a resit. The consequences derived from non-compliance with this regulation can have very negative effects directly related to the registration process (overlapping and / or academic incompatibilities), as well as the corresponding expectations in the completion of the Degree.
