Introduction

In recent decades, English has become the lingua franca in academic communication and scientific research, as well as a very valuable communication tool for intercultural communication among different peoples. Furthermore, the new undergraduate degrees (graus) lead us towards a teacher profile with a multilingual mindset, ready to use different languages in his/her professional career.

 

This subject seeks to activate the students’ linguistic competence in the English language to a level equivalent to B2.1 as described in the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages), in accordance with the linguistic requirements set by the Ministry of Education for undergraduate degrees in Early Childhood Education (educació infantil).

Pre-course requirements

Students should have a B1 English language level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Objectives

1. To achieve a B2.1 level in English according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
2. To promote autonomous learning.

  • CEM-52 - To express oneself, orally and in writing, in a foreign language.
  • CG-03 - To be able to communicate in English at level B1, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for languages (CEFR).

Students will be able to communicate in English both orally and in writing according to B2.1 level.

The evaluation of this course will be based on continuous assessment and a final exam.

Having an official English language certificate does not exempt students from taking this course.

The continuous assessment system will entail a range of learning activities throughout the term which will provide teachers with evidence for the achievement of competences and conforms to the learning outcomes mentioned above.

Continuous evaluation for this course includes the following components:

Classroom participation (10%)

4 online writings (10%)

4 online speaking activities (10%)

4 group projects (40%)

One midterm test (10%)

Final exam (20%)

This course involves 120 hours autonomous learning besides face-to-face lessons.

Oral linguistic skills will be evaluated through classroom observation and recordings uploaded to the Moodle page. Students will regularly be required to do oral activities during lessons that will be assessed. Oral skills evaluation will be ongoing and face-to-face, hereby emphasizing the student’s final progress. Therefore, there will not be any specific oral tests at the end of the term. 

Criteria for Second Sitting

Students who have not attended 80% of the subject in the first sitting do not have the right to take the final exam in that same sitting.

Students with a final mark between 4 and 5 in the first sitting only have the right in the second sitting to make up the material that was failed or not handed in.

Students with a mark that is less than a 4 in the first sitting will have to make up 100% of the subject in the second sitting.
