Introduction

In recent decades, English has become the lingua franca in academic communication and scientific research, as well as a very valuable communication tool for intercultural communication among different peoples. Furthermore, the new undergraduate degrees (graus) lead us towards a teacher profile with a multilingual mindset, ready to use different languages in his/her professional career.

This subject seeks to activate the students’ linguistic competence in the English language to a level equivalent to B2.2/C1.1 as described in the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages), in accordance with the linguistic requirements set by the Ministry of Education for undergraduate degrees in primary Education.

Pre-course requirements

To have a level B2.1 in English according to the Common European Framework of References for Languages.

Objectives

1. To achieve a B2.2/C.1.1 level in English according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
2. To promote autonomous learning.

Competences / Learning outcomes of the degree programme

  • CEM-52 - To express oneself, orally and in writing, in a foreign language.
  • CG-03 - To be able to communicate in English at level B1, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for languages (CEFR).

Learning outcomes of the subject

Students will be able to communicate in English both orally and in writing according to B2.2/C1.1 level.

Syllabus

During the academic course, we will work on relevant and current topics relating to the area of Education.

Teaching and learning activities

In person

Assessment of this subject is continuous and class-based. Any student that fails to attend 80% of the sessions will lose their right to a continuous evaluation, and will have to take an test at the end of the semester.

Possession of an official certificate does not mean validation of this subject.

English will be used as the vehicular language in class from the first moment. To maximise learning opportunities, students should express themselves in the English language during classes.

Continuous assessment comprises several formative activities, distributed throughout the semester, that will provide the teacher with evidence of the acquisition process of the competency, translated into the learning results already explained. The class contents and assessment criteria will depend on the group assigned to you. Consult the course programme 2019/20 of your group to obtain more details.

Continuous assessment will revolve around the following components:

Projects

Readings

Speaking activities

Writing activities

Vocabulary

Grammar

Listening

To pass the subject, it is necessary to have passed all the mentioned components separately. This rule applies to both the first and second call. In the case of suspending the first call, the student will only have to make up those skills not surpassed.

The subject, aside from the class-based sessions, includes approximately 120 hours of personal work; autonomous work, therefore, is essential to pass the subject.

SPEAKING

The oral aspect of the language will be assessed mainly through classroom observation. On a regular basis, students will be required to complete oral activities in the classroom that will be assessed. The evaluation of the oral part will be continuous and class-based, with special emphasis on the student's final progress. Therefore, there will not be a specific oral test at the end of the semester.

READING, WRITING, VOCABULARY, GRAMMAR, LISTENING

These components will be assessed continuously through objective tests.
