Introduction

 All cases in need of implant placement will be presented at this session where all students together with the faculty will discuss treatment alternatives in a comprehensive manner and by all means with solid bibliographic support. The University Departments of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Periodontics and Prosthesis are involved in these sessions.

 

Pre-course requirements

Residents are asked to have an extensive knowledge through literature research of the cases to be presented. No case will be allowed into the session without a thorough analysis of the problem, deep clinical and radiological planning including 3D, prosthodontics pre-surgical planning and a deep review of the different treatment options.

Objectives

-       Create a critical & sceptical scenario where a number of management actions can be designed for a specific clinical situation.

-       Develop among our students diagnostic skills, which allow for an integrative approach.

-       Integrate all the diagnostic tools: clinical, image, lab, in an orderly and efficient manner

-       Provoke an open-minded approach when it comes to define treatment plans

-       Understand the different between opinion & evidence based diagnosis

-       Be able to discuss and debate cases with peer colleagues

 

Competences / Learning outcomes of the degree programme

-       Awareness and dominance of all surgical and prosthetic scenarios

-       Skills in all surgical procedures to allow different exits for a given problem

-       Skills in all rehabilitation procedures to allow different exits for a given problem

-       Cone Beam CT reading & diagnostic abilities

-       Self-criticism when debating surgical alternatives

-       Ultimately be able to combine scientific evidence with clinical experience and personal skills when designing an optimal treatment plan.

-       Manage complications in an expedite and orderly manner

Learning outcomes of the subject

Residents should be able to:

-       Be self-confident when it comes to solve any missing tooth scenario.

-       Develop arguing and debating skills when it comes to defend a specific treatment plan.

-       Be able to connect and cooperate with other departments in multispecialty treatments.

Syllabus

-       Announcements from the session coordinator.

-       Presentation of each case by the responsible team.

-       Discussion of each case with the rest of the participants.

-       Decision regarding final treatment plan.

-       Final remarks.

-       Complications section with review of failed/complex cases retrospectively.

 

Teaching and learning activities

In person

-       The official format for IMOS presentations must be followed.

-       Presenters should provide at least two treatment options for each case.

-       Each of the treatment options must be documented with enough literature.

-       Residents and clinical instructors must have discussed the case internally in advance.

-       No interruptions during case presentation unless severe pitfalls detected by the faculty.

-       Debate on each case based on literature and previous experiences

Evaluation systems and criteria

In person

       All students will be under continued evaluation based on:

-       Number of cases presented.

-       Quality of presentations

-       Diagnostic and management skills.

-       Evidence based treatment plans.

-       Degree of participation in the sessions.

-       Leadership.
