This subject will provide students the knowledge and skills necessary to perform clinical treatments

Objectives

The objective of this subject is for students to:

Document all cases with photographs and radiographs.

Learn how to perform cameral openings under magnification.

Practice different instrumentation techniques.

Practice different obturation techniques.

Practice different techniques of removing filling materials.

Competences / Learning outcomes of the degree programme

Students will be expected to:

Be aware of clinical and laboratory-based procedures and diagnostic tests, understand their reliability and diagnostic viability and be competent in interpreting the results.

Know how to apply the correct principles to control anxiety and stress in themselves, in patients and in other members of the dentistry team. 

Handle, distinguish between and select the tools and materials suitable for dentistry.

Have knowledge of dental biomaterials: how to handle them, their properties, indications, allergies, biocompatibility, toxicity and elimination of residues as well as their environmental impact.

Take and interpret radiographs and other image-based procedures relevant to dental practice.

Prepare and isolate the operatory field.

Undertake endodontic treatment and apply procedures to preserve pulp vitality.

Learning outcomes of the subject

Students will be expected to:

Diagnose caries lesions.

Establish the need to fill a carious lesion.

Remove the rotten tissue of a carious lesion with maximum respect to the remaining dental tissue.

Select the means of removal of decayed dentin according to the nature of the lesion in question.

Prepare an appropriate medical history in order to assess the state of the pulp.

Know how to organize the materials and instruments for endodontics, and how they should be treated between patients.

List the usual root canals and the most frequent variations in each dental arch.

Adopt the appropriate therapeutic approach according to the different pulp and periapical entities that require root canal treatment.

Properly isolate the operative field when preparing for root canal treatment.

Properly plan the root canal treatment.

Identify the material and instruments useful in endodontics.

Perform the correct access cavity openings and locate the entrances to the root canals.

Use the appropriate instruments for root canal treatment.

Fill the root canals correctly.

Syllabus

Each student must work on a minimum of 150 in vitro teeth.  

- Chamber access openings in the front teeth (upper and lower).

- Chamber access openings in the back teeth (upper and lower).

- Use of a minimum of 5 instrumentation techniques.

- Use of a minimum of 4 obturation techniques.

- Use of a minimum of 3 retreatment techniques. 

Teaching and learning activities

In person

Preclinical practices will be undertaken in the laboratory of the CUO. Each student must make a dossier with photographs and radiographs of all teeth worked on. 

Practical work will be tutored and supervised by a teacher from the Department of Endodontics and Dental Restoration.

Evaluation systems and criteria

In person

At the end of the term the student will make a defence of the various cases performed before a judging panel.
