Introduction

In the event that the health authorities announce a new period of confinement due to the evolution of the health crisis caused by COVID-19, the teaching staff will promptly communicate how this may effect the teaching methodologies and activities as well as the assessment.

The in-company training or external technology centres offer the student direct contact with the professional world and will provide practical experience before finishing the academic training.

Pre-course requirements

None

Objectives

Introduction to the labour market to achieve integration and application of theoretical knowledge in different professional contexts. The internship will help to further the student’s development of abilities, competencies, attitudes and aptitudes.

  • CB4 - Students can transmit information, ideas, problems and solutions to specialist and non-specialist audiences.
  • CE12 - To undertake a professional project in the field of Bioengineering-specific technologies in which knowledge acquired through teaching is synthesised and incorporated.
  • CE5 - To promote entrepreneurship and acquire knowledge for the organisation and management of Bioengineering companies while paying attention to their legal framework and the regulations in force at the time
  • CG4 - To resolve problems based on initiative, be good at decision-making, creativity, critical reasoning and communication, as well as the transmission of knowledge, skills and prowess in the field of Bioengineering
  • CG9 - The ability to organise and plan in the field of business, as well as in institutions and organisations.
  • CT1 - To understand company organisation and the science that governs its activities; to apply work-related rules and understand the relationship between planning, industrial and commercial strategies, quality and profit.

  • CT6 - To detect gaps in your own knowledge and overcome this through critical reflection and choosing better actions to broaden your knowledge.

Learning outcomes of the subject

  • Carries out the strategic planning within the organisation or centre in which the student is working.

  • Handles efficiently the legislation and rules applied to the organisation or centre in which the student is working.

  • Participates actively in all phases of the design of a project in Bioengineering.

Syllabus

The content of the in-company training depends on the objective and the type of project that is proposed in the work plan. The content and the period of the internship have to be specified in the work plan, which has involved the external tutor of the company or investigation centre. The work plan will be evaluated by the academic tutor of the university and will need to be approved before the start of the internship.

The internship has to be part of a written agreement between the university and the company research centre with a curricular specification. The curricular external internship cannot be started without a written agreement.

During the internship period other courses can be studied towards the completion of the curriculum. However, it is the responsibility of the student to combine these different activities without affecting the internship.

In the 1st semester, the student will have to choose one of the internship modalities:

  1. Internship in an external national organisation, separate from the final mark project at UIC Barcelona

  2. Internship in an external national organisation linked to the final mark project

  3. Internship in an external international organisation (Erasmus) linked to the final mark project in the same organisation

Teaching and learning activities

In person

The internship is in-person at the location that is determined by the external organisation or research centre. Before the start of the internship, the student has to have an approved work plan.

The internship is 240 hours at the external organisation or research centre and 10 hours of tutorial sessions at the university with the academic tutor. The distribution of the internship hours is flexible and should be in agreement with the company or research centre. The internship should start in the second semester and preferably be full-time. External internships without a work plan and without following the assessment criteria cannot be accepted.

Evaluation systems and criteria

In person

The presentational assessment methods can be carried out online.

The assessment systems and criteria are based on a series of assessment forms from the external tutor and the assessment of the final report by the academic tutor.

Forms:

  • Intermediate assessment form 20%

  • Final assessment form 30%

  • Final report 50%

The intermediate assessment form is indicative for the student and the academic tutor and will be used as base for improvement for the rest of the internship.

The final report will be made by the student and will be used as evidence of the knowledge acquired during the internship and the comprehension of the external organisation, as well as a means of contributing a critical reflexion about the added value of a Bioengineer within the project or the general strategy of the organisation.

Once the internship has finished, the university will issue an accrediting document which contains the following aspects: collaborating body where the internship has taken place, description of the internship with the duration period and the exact dates, and the activities that have been carried out.

Important considerations:

  1. Plagiarism, copying or any other action that may be considered cheating will count as zero in that assessment. Moreover, plagiarism during the exams will mean the immediate failure of the whole subject.

  2. In the second-sitting exams, the maximum mark students will be able to obtain is "Excellent" (an honours distinction will not be possible).

  3. Changes to the calendar, exam dates or the assessment system will not be accepted.

  4. Exchange students (Erasmus and others) or students resitting will be subject to the same conditions as the rest of the students.
