Introduction

"Editing Audio and Video", together with the previous course of 1st year 'Plató' and the upcoming television courses, will help students to reach the tecnhical and teorethical basis of the audiovisual curriculum. The course focuses on how to edit raw material. 

Pre-course requirements

Introduce the basis of technical and narrative skills needed to develop an audiovisual product.

Objectives

The objective of the course is to train students with maximum knowledge concerning the assembly of a story and a reportage.

Learning outcomes of the subject

  • Knowing the types of nonlinear postproduction facilities, equipment and configuration.
  • Managed with ease editing software video, audio, web pages and graphics editing.
  • Perform the cataloging process, timing and capture images, interviews and statements for your organization in the assembly process.
  • Synchronize video and audio from brands corresponding picture and sound slates or any other reference.
  • Perform the full edition of the project, determining the organization and duration of intros, phrases offscreen (off) and tails.
  • Generate and implement inlaid titles, credits, graphics and trademarks necessary, from specific titling tools.
  • Create an audiovisual project, considering the communicative conditions of pace, continuity and movement, among others, that contribute to the achievement of program objectives.
  • Generate a final project that meets the requirements and specific rules for broadcast, video, audio and sync.
  • Generate versions in various output formats tailored to their recipients and band widths, available on satellite broadcasts and on the Internet.
  • Know how to use graphic resources in journalism or communication projects.

Focused Praxis. Handing in occasional exercises to learn theory through practice.

Lectures. In lectures, lecturers/professors not only transmit content or knowledge, but also, and above all else, attitudes, motivation, skills and values, etc. They also ensure that participants can express their opinions and arguments to the other students.

Practical workshop. A highly practical working activity, where students can acquire skills that are practical or also theoretical (intellectual skills, logical skills, critical skills, intellectual learning skills, study skills, quoting skills, etc).

Evaluation systems and criteria

In person

The evaluation will be continuated and class attendance is mandatory. 

Students must submit several weekly video pieces that will be recorded and edited by the student. The work will be individual and groupal as well. Attitude, teamwork, fulfilment of deadlines, creativity and content will be also evaluated. 

 

Summary assessment:

  • Practical part: 70% (90% of the practices must be delivered to be evaluated. The non-delivery will be equivalent to not being able to evaluate the subject)
    • Exercise 1: Basic AV writing
    • Exercise 2: Storyboard (traffic light)
    • Exercise 3: Premiere edition
    • Exercise 4: Basic assembly with pre-recorded images
    • Exercise 5. The 12 plans
    • Exercise 6. The street survey
    • Exercise 7: Sound and synchronization
    • Exercise 8: Transform a news for the ear
    • Exercise 9: Proof of editing under time control
    • Exercise 10: Auto-evaluation
  • Exam: 20% (it is mandatory to approve it to count with the practical part)
  • Attitude and assistance: 10%

*A voluntary visit to a professional communication medium will be scheduled which will help to round off the final grade of the subject.


To take over the course (2nd call) the student must pass the following assessment activities:

  • Theoretical exam (30% of the note)
  • Practical part: 70%

      • Exercise 3: Premiere edition
      • Exercise 4: Basic assembly with pre-recorded images

For further calls the subject has to be done again, assisting class.
