Introduction

The objective of this program is to provide students with the academic language necessary to understand and present research related to Physiotherapy in English. This is why it will be especially important to develop critical reading and listening skills. Also, the skills of oral and written expression will be strengthened to consolidate knowledge and stimulate communication in an academic context.

The program consists of 3 parts: lectures, tutorials and self-study.

The master classes will focus on reading and listening comprehension in the field of scientific research related to Physiotherapy. These classes are designed with the aim of developing understanding in an academic context. The activities of speaking and writing serve to improve communication in universities and conferences, as well as to provide a solid linguistic basis, with the aim of strengthening the knowledge introduced during the course.

The tutorials are focused on student development and interpersonal skills and include a group presentation, which will later be evaluated.

And finally, the independent study, or 'distance learning' focuses on: the development of writing, listening and reading skills; the grammar and specific vocabulary consolidation; to give the student greater autonomy in learning a foreign language.

The three parts are specifically designed to provide students with the skills, knowledge and resources needed to communicate effectively and with confidence in English related to physical therapy.

To reinforce the receptive skills of reading and listening through practice, using various incentives, as well as to promote the development of the productive skills of speaking and writing.

Tutorials:

To develop the students' interpersonal skills as well as their ability to work with others, both in their native language and foreign language.

Independent study:

Syllabus

Students will cover topics related to Evidence-based Physical Therapy and Integrative research.

Evidence-based Physical Therapy case studies will be read in English, and students will present search strategies in English to answer clinical questions which arose during their clinical training.

Integrative research will be reviewed. Fundamental concepts of Systematic Reviews and meta-analysis will be reviewed, including article format and design, and terminology.

In the tutorial project, groups will formulate a research question, perform a search for appropriate literature and prepare an oral presentation of the synthesis of information as well as appropriate conclusions.

Language knowledge:

Students will revise/consolidate knowledge about linking structures, punctuation, and content and organization of a full systematic review article.

Teaching and learning activities

In person

Students will become actively engaged in the process of reading, analyzing and synthesizing information from a variety of academic genres specific to physical therapy, such as extracts from textbooks and physical therapy journals. Students will discuss course contents in collaborative tasks. They will give presentations as well as produce some writing assignments. Listening activities will comprise listening for general and specific information given in lectures by teachers and presentations by other students and online speakers.

Internet-based language tools and material will be used and applied throughout their overall learning process. These materials will further form an integral part of the students’ self-study, thus equipping and motivating students for the life-long learning of English related to their field.

Students are reminded that attendance and participation in class and continuous evaluation are fundamental to passing the course. Furthermore, group work outside of class will also form a major part of the evaluation.  Homework assignments will be posted on Moodle for students to consult in case of absences from class.

To obtain a passing mark (e.g. a 5) on the final exam, the students must achieve a score of 50%.

It will not be possible to pass the course by only taking the final exam in any sitting.

Make up exams

The 2nd sitting can only substitute up to 45% of the total course grade.  It will consist of an exam and may include a writing component. Group work, class work and homework cannot be made up in the second sitting.

Students who have failed the course and wish to present for the second sitting exam must contact the subject coordinator by June 15, 2019, to determine the content of the second sitting evaluation. Depending on the case, a student may be required to complete a writing component and/ or an oral presentation assignment in addition to the exam.

Many small progress tests, or quizzes, will be given throughout the course. No make-up quizzes will be given, so students who miss a quiz will receive a 0 for that quiz.  However, because each quiz bears little weight individually in the course evaluation, missing one will have little effect on the total grade.
