Introduction

Increasingly, people use additional therapies to treat their ailments, especially when related to problems of the musculoskeletal system. In physiotherapy, we can use these therapies to complement our treatments and help improve the health of our patients.

All these techniques have the basic natural principles in common of helping the body to launch their self-healing systems, ie, therapeutic stimuli and provide the necessary conditions for recovery of health.

Objectives

  • Know the different complementary techniques used by the physical agents or other elements and their application in physiotherapy.
  •                                 Be introduced to the principles of natural medicine and its therapies.
  •                                 Identify physiological effects, indications and counter-indications of the different techniques and their scientific validity.
  •                                 Knowing the principles of Natural Medicine, Traditional Chinese Medicine and Homeopathy
  •                                 Learn the basics of reflexology and acupuncture.

Learning outcomes of the subject

Students:

- Understand physiotherapy procedures based on specific methods and techniques applicable in the alterations of the spinal balance.

- Understand physiotherapy procedures based on specific methods and techniques applicable in the pathology related to the specialty of medicine and surgery in traumatology.

- Apply specific manual therapy techniques in different regions of the musculoskeletal system.

- Understand physiotherapy procedures based on specific methods and techniques applicable in the pathology related to the specialty of medicine in rheumatology.

- Understand physiotherapy procedures based on specific methods and techniques applicable in the pathology related to the specialty of medicine and surgery in Neurology.

- Understand physiotherapy procedures based on specific methods and techniques applicable in the pathology related to the specialty of medicine and surgery in Neurology.

- Understand the theoretical basis of reflex complementary therapies.

- Know how to apply the diagnostic process in physical therapy, establishing a hierarchy of the patient's needs..

- Design physiotherapy intervention plans incorporating scientific research and evidence-based practice.

- Have the ability to intervene in the areas of health promotion and disease prevention.

- Maintain an attitude of motivation and improvement in the learning process

- Have the necessary skills for work team and oral/written communication

2. Natural Medicine

  •                                 Naturist criteria. Basic concepts and fundamentals
  •                                 Therapies of natural medicine:
  •                                 Naturist nutrition and dietetics
  •                                 Phytotherapy applied to the musculoskeletal system  

3. Homeopathy

4. Manual therapies

  •                                 Introduction to reflexology. Reflex locomotion therapy. Massage technique. Indications and counter- indications.          
  •                                 Introduction to Shiatsu. Massage technique. Energy meridians.
  •                                 Introduction to Tuina. Massage technique. Energy meridians.

5. Traditional Chinese medicine

  •                                 Fundamentals of Acupuncture. History. Acupuncture Points. Acupuncture applied to pain.
  •                                 Cupping therapy
  •                                 Application of heat with Moxibustion.
  •                                 Auriculotherapy. Reflex locomotion therapy.
  •                                 Electroacupuncture.
  •                                 Tongue diagnosis.

Evaluation systems and criteria

The materials will be evaluated following similar procedures:

The training activities related to the acquisition of knowledge and the individual student work will be evaluated with a written exams and presentation-exhibition of project-works.

The practical training activities will be evaluated by testing the execution of the tasks. Such tests are included within the system of the continuous assessment of the student and are carried out in the theoretical and practical seminars.

Independent study activities will be evaluated in compliance with the guidelines and learning aids to which the teacher and / or tutor instructs the student in the use of independent study room. Following these activities, the student will get a continuous feedback of his/her own learning process.
