Every spring since the 2014-2015 academic year, the Institute for Multilingualism has organised a research seminar that takes place on-site at UIC Barcelona. Its main objective is to exchange research interests related to applied linguistics and multilingual education with lecturers from other universities and other faculties at UIC Barcelona.
Each year other universities take part, such as the Autonomous University of Barcelona, the University of Barcelona, the Pompeu Fabra University, the University of Navarra and Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea (University of the Basque Country).
The main research lines carried out at the Institute for Multilingualism and the MULTIMAT Research Group are concerned with analysing a range of foreign language learning environments. We are primarily interested in the development of multilingualism through naturalistic, immersion and formal language acquisition.
More specifically, the group carries out applied linguistics research on:
- The effects of Integrated Content and Language in Higher Education (ICLHE), Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) and EFL (English as a Foreign Language) on linguistic gains on all educational levels.
- Social interaction and its affordances for teaching, learning and teacher development in ICLHE / CLIL / EMI (English as a Medium of Instruction) contexts.
- The acquisition and maintenance of Catalan, Spanish, foreign and heritage languages in school-age children and adults in the context of Catalonia.
