City Registration

What is it?

City registration (empadronamiento or padrón) is an official record of all people living in Spain and their corresponding addresses. Though registration depends on the neighbourhood you live in, you may register at any office, regardless of your place of residence.

Am I required to register?

Anyone who plans on living in Spain for more than six months in any given year is required to register (empadronarse).

We recommend you go first thing in the morning as this way you will not have to wait in line. The document is issued immediately.

What documents do I need to submit??

  • Identification of the person who is registering: Passport, DNI or NIE.
  • A document that verifies your address: a signed lease (with a duration of at least 6 months), with your full name and address. These documents must be original.
  • If your name is not on the lease, but your partner’s or friend’s name is, to register you will need a signed authorisation from your partner/friend stating that you live there. You will also need a photocopy of their DNI or passport and NIE (if they arrived before you and already have a NIE).
  • Price: Free of charge

This registration document does not expire, except in the case of non-EU foreigners without permanent residence status, who will need to re-register every two years.
