’Real World Evidence’ Chair
The main lines of research covered by this Chair focus on: studying the effectiveness of medications for the treatment of different diseases, as well as examining any relationship with the severity of the disease, evaluating its cost and budgetary impact, and finally defining the treatment pathway based on real data, comparing recommendations provided in clinical practice guides with the real treatment received by patients.
Research Group for the Evaluation of Public Policies
The aim of this group is to help to create evidence, from the point of view of Health Economics, of different lifestyle habits, such as alcohol, drugs, tobacco or eating habits, in other words to create a line of research on lifestyle habits in Catalonia from the point of view of efficiency.
Data analysis of the ALERTA/FRAGIL programme costs and methods to measure the results of care received at home
The aim of this programme is to evaluate the impact on healthcare results of the use of resources before and after the two observation programmes (ALERTA and FRAGIL) and compare them with the healthcare results and use of resources to analyse the group overall (trying to link them to create a potential comparison between the two groups and an economic evaluation of the future). The three groups of patients need to be analysed, as well as the costs and income of each group. The potential to develop a future economic evaluation will also be studied.
System for pricing and reimbursing medication combinations that have more than one set of indications
The main objective of this project is to analyse the different options that exist to better inform people about funding procedures and fixing prices for a medication combination, particularly for medication with a high cost, which means the same for new indications funded by the Public Healthcare System.
To achieve this objective, it is necessary to achieve three smaller objectives:
Objective 1: To learn about the behaviour of the regulation of prices in Spain when authorisations of new sets of indications that involve an increase in value of a medications used in combination with others take place.
Objective 2: To find out which methods of fixing prices and access conditions are considered at an international level due to new authorised combinations.
Objective 3: To create an “Advisory Board” to identify current problems in terms of the regulation of prices when an increase in the value of medications used in combination with others takes place, as well as the feasibility and desirability that the change takes place by regulators considered to be suitable.
Economic cost of Alzheimer’s disease in Catalonia
Evaluation of the number of patients with Alzheimer’s disease in Catalonia, an attempt to make estimations at a Spanish level and calculate the average annual cost per patient and annual cost (direct medical care and indirect medical costs) of Alzheimer’s disease overall, while taking the various stages of the disease into account.
An evaluation of the effectiveness and efficiency of educational programmes on nutrition among older people who are institutionalised, focusing particularly on the improvement of the quantity of the food intake with and without modified textures.
Inequalities in treatment of ADHD in Catalonia
The main objective of the study is to study the variability in the treatment of ADHD in Catalonia. Apart from this, there are other more specific objectives:
a)A study of the variability in the treatment of ADHD in terms of patterns of consumption of mental health resources and treatment of people who have been diagnosed with ADHD and are in treatment, taking into account both the intensity and the types of treatment in combination with each other.
b)Defining whether an impact can be observed depending on the provider or centre that is providing the care in terms of variability of care.
c)Observing variability by geographical region.
d)Links to family intervention and how this reduces or increases treatment.
e)Differences in cost depending on the type of treatment or the combination of family assistance.
f)Impact of the financial crisis and the new co-payment system on the consumption of medication and the number of visits to doctors.
g)Long-term impact on the labour market, although this is subject to the length of the time series obtained.
h)Potential impact on educational performance depending on the treatment.
i)Impact on criminality among people with ADHD.
User-demand for medication
There is a group of disadvantaged people in our society who need to choose between food and medication. There are many Spanish citizens who do not have enough resources to buy the medication they need. This project aims to analyse the demand for medication, the socio-demographic variables this demand depends on and the different users who have these needs in our society.
Non-healthy lifestyles: tools for the analysis of healthcare policies
Institutional Reference number: ECO2017-83771-C3-3-R, Ministry of the Economy, Industry and Competitiveness (MINECO), the State Agency for Research (AEI) and the European Regional Development Fund (FEDER).
Project funded by the Ministry of the Economy, Industry and Competitiveness (MINECO), the State Agency for Research (AEI) and the European Regional Development Fund (FEDER).
The specific objectives of the project are: to undertake an economic evaluation of programmes or interventions to reduce passive smoking by measuring the direct health costs for the Spanish National Healthcare System.
• To identify the determining factors in the health of consumers of alcohol among adolescents in Spain through micro-econometric models, taking into account causality and social interaction in this population.
• To undertake an economic evaluation of a programme to reduce the consumption of alcohol, evaluating whether there was a return on the investment of public money in terms of healthcare.
• To quantify the economic burden of people who consume heroin in Catalonia, while taking into account direct healthcare costs.
• To evaluate the efficiency, in terms of costs and effectiveness of a new treatment for assisted heroin consumption in Catalonia in drug-dependency centres.
• To design and undertake a qualitative analysis of the nutritional practices of older people in retirement homes.
• To evaluate, from the point of view of efficiency, a programme or intervention that corrects malnutrition in retirement homes and, consequently, diminishes the consumption of healthcare costs for that population.
• To be aware of the impact of the sugar tax, approved in Catalonia in March 2017, based on sales.
Methodological and statistical study of the consumption of healthcare resources. Comparison before and after attending the hospital and at-home care. Private study of the specific impact of nutritional aspects
The general objective is to evaluate the methodological and statistical study of a project developed by NUTRICIA Spain for a hospital in Valencia. The study aims to analyse the consumption of healthcare resources based on two situations where the patient experiences a period of hospital care and another of care at home. The objective is the comparison of the healthcare resources consumed and the impact of various variables that can explain the differences before and after attending the hospital unit or the at-home care. Specifically, the impact or relationship the concept that is the subject of the study has on or with nutrition.
Does a reduction in the generosity of unemployment benefit worsen health? Evidence from a natural experiment in Spain
The objective of his project is to study the causal effect of the generosity of unemployment benefit on the health of individuals after a labour market reform, used as a natural experiment.
The economic burden of Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)
This study aims to evaluate the economic burden that this disease causes, taking into account direct healthcare costs and direct non-healthcare costs and well as loss of productivity.
The analysis will be undertaken from the perspective of the System and also the social perspective. Patient and family data will be used as well as administrative data to calculate costs.
