Online methodology represents significant cost savings for the teaching of basic life support courses

More and more teaching centres use online teaching to provide basic life support training. For this reason, a team of researchers at UIC Barcelona made up by Dr Jordi Castillo, Dr Encarna Rodríguez, Dr Marta Trapero and Dr Albert Gallart, has carried out the study Cost minimization analysis for basic life support focussed on verifying if this methodology is more efficient than in-person courses.

Researchers analysed the cost minimisation for two Basic Life Support and Automatic External Defibrillation (AED) courses. One of the courses was taught in person and the other was largely online and the rest in person. Both courses had the same duration and content as recommended by the European Resuscitation Council. After analysing the costs of each course, the results showed that online methodology was more efficient since it represented savings in Basic Life Support training, mainly due to reduced costs regarding lecturers and the use of classrooms and training materials.
 
The main author of the study, Dr Jordi Castillo, lecturer at the Nursing Department and perfusionist at the Hospital de Bellvitge, has been recognised for this article with the first prize for the Best Publication in a scientific journal awarded by the Academia de las Ciencias Médicas [Academy of Medical Sciences] and delivered by the Consejo Catalán de Resucitación [Catalan Resuscitation Council]. It is the second year running that Dr Castillo receives this award.
