Introduction

Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics is the area of dentistry that deals with the supervision, guidance and correction of growth and maturation of the craniofacial structures.

Major responsibilities of orthodontic practice include the diagnosis, prevention, interception and treatment of occlusion anomalies and associated changes in bone and soft tissue.

The orthodontist should monitor the guidance of the dentition and the relationship between their supporting structures to achieve and maintain harmonious relations between the face and cranial structures that allow the patient physiology and dento-facial aesthetics optimal.

Basic orthodontic subjets includes craniofacial growth, tooth development and physiology of the stomatognathic system. The imaging is an indispensable diagnostic tool and will be studied in this course, CBCT as well as lateral and frontal cephalometric skull.

Biomechanics, different types of tooth movement, the response of the tooth under the application of forces and materials used in orthodontic treatment complete the course content.

Pre-course requirements

Degree in dentistry

Objectives

The educational objectives for Basic orthodontic subjects include a set of educational activities on the cranio-facial growth and tooth development. The study of the main radiological techniques used in orthodontic diagnosis is also introduced.

In this course we introduce the basic principles of dental and orthopedic movement work, orthodontic materials and the laws of biomechanics.

The objectives of the labs are the practical application of theoretical knowledge and the achievement of competence for diagnosis through facial analysis, intraoral examination, study models, panoramic and lateral skull teleradiography .

Competences/Learning outcomes of the degree programme

Knowledge of the development of the dentition and competent to identify a particular situation tooth development

Knowledge of facial growth
Knowledge of the physiology of the stomatognathic system

Be competent to understand the biomechanical principles of tooth movement

Be competent to perform a cephalometric diagnosis

Learning outcomes of the subject

The orthodontist at the end of their university education should know the physiological aspects of tooth development, facial growth and stomatognathic system in general.

The imaging is an important part in the diagnosis of the patient and is essential in their formation as well as the different types of cephalometric analysis.

The student should develop along the ability to diagnose the patient by cephalometric analysis.

The student must master the different materials used in the orthodontic treatment

Syllabus

  1. Development of the dentition.
  2. Facial growth.
  3. Physiology and pathophysiology of the stomatognathic system.
  4. Aspects of tooth movement and dentofacial orthopedics.
  5. Radiology and other imaging techniques.
  6. Cephalometrics
  7. Orthodontic materials.
  8. Biomechanics.

Teaching and learning activities

In person

Case method: Study and discussion of clinical cases

Lectures: Teach basic skills. Includes bibliographical references necessary for the study and expansion of the subject.

Seminars: They are an overview of the theoretical syllabus, with a much more practical side, allowing a more flexible student-teacher interaction.

Tutorials: Monitoring and individualized help of student progress.

Student work: Job search and research performed by the student under the supervision of teachers and autonomously.

Labs: Practical application of theoretical knowledge. Help acquire the ability and skill necessary for clinical application.

Evaluation systems and criteria

In person

The course is 100% attendance in both theoretical and practical sessions.

The student must spend additional hours for study and preparation of the cinical cases

The theoretical and practical program are continuously evaluated with written and oral exams.

The evaluation will take into consideration the following points:

- The theoretical knowledge

- The presentation of the work requested

- The student clinical practice

- Ergonomy

- Attitude and Behavior
