Introduction

The course of oral and maxillofacial surgery is an optional subject for ECTS 2. This is a medical-surgical discipline dedicated to the study, prevention, development, diagnosis, treatment and repair of the skull, face, neck, jaw and oral cavity (including teeth) and related diseases, both congenital and acquired. According to European guidelines, the specialty includes the following topics:

-        Head and neck congenital malformations: cranio-facial surgery.

-        Head and neck plastic, cosmetic and reconstructive surgery.

-        Dentofacial Deformities: orthognathic surgery and facial orthopedics.

-        Cranio-maxillo-facial trauma.

-        Temporomandibular joint.

-        Head and neck oncology.

-        Reconstructive surgery and microsurgical techniques.

-        Pathology and oral medicine.

-        Dentoalveolar, periodontal and preprosthetic surgery and implantology.

-        Head and neck infectious disorders.

The subject aims to help solve the MIR exam questions.

Pre-course requirements

To take the subject "Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery", students must have a basic knowledge of the anatomy and pathophysiology of the human body and successfully completed the "Surgical Pathophysiology" course.

Objectives

The overall objective of this discipline is to understand the basic skills of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

The specific objectives of the course are:

- To understand the basis for the prevention and early detection of head and neck diseases.

- To be able to perform the history, physical examination and complementary and imaging tests to guide the diagnosis in the field of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

- To acquire the knowledge and skills of oral and maxillofacial pathology that allow the general practitioner to guide the diagnosis, to initiate the treatment and make appropriate referrals.

-Answer any questions MIR examination.

Competences/Learning outcomes of the degree programme

  • 09 - Understand and recognize the effects, mechanisms and manifestations of disease on the structure and function of the human body.
  • 10 - To understand and recognise the agents and risk factors which determine health status, and learn how they determine the symptoms and natural development of acute or chronic diseases in individuals and populations.
  • 12 - Understanding the foundations for action, the indications and efficacy of therapeutic interventions, based on available scientific evidence.
  • 15 - Ability to formulate an initial diagnosis and establish a rationalised diagnostic strategy.
  • 17 - Establish the diagnosis, prognosis and treatment, applying principles based on the best information possible and safe clinical practice..
  • 19 - Propose preventive measures appropriate to each clinical situation.
  • 23 - Communicate effectively and clearly, both orally and in writing with patients, family members, media and other professionals.

Learning outcomes of the subject

When the student passes the “Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery” course the student should be able to:

- Know the competences of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

- Be able to apply theoretical knowledge to real life medical situations.

- Apply the knowledge acquired to promote educational and community health: prevention and early detection of oral and maxillofacial pathologies.

- Know how to interpret correctly anamnesis, perform physical examinations, complementary and radiological tests that guide the diagnosis in the field of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

- Carry out a correct differential diagnosis.

- Properly focus the oral and maxillofacial diagnosis in order to initiate treatment and appropriate referral.

- Be motivated to maintain and improve self-education.

  12. Dentoalveolar and preprosthetic surgery and implantology.

Elective clinical practices: Attending in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Centro Médico Teknon during the month of July (according to surgery schedule, and only when the student has attended all theoretical lessons).

Teaching and learning activities

In person

The lectures will be entered with a clinical situation, and then taught in Master Class dynamic format through clinical cases. At the end of the class we will test the acquisition of the previously explained concepts by the method Problem-Based Learning.

Master Class is where the theoretical knowledge in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery is given.

Case Method introduces practical case studies that both introduce and demonstrate the theoretical matter. Furthermore, the student develops the habit of medical practice: history, examination, diagnosis and treatment decisions.

Problem-Based Learning aims to help students find a solution to the problem, so that students acquire skills in differential diagnosis, prevention and health education.

Lessons will be taught in person, respecting the distance measures. In case of isolation, they will be carried out in webinar format through the moodle platform.

Lectures will be supplemented by teaching materials supplied through the Moodle platform.

(elective) Clinical practices promote learning and clinical-surgical skills. They consist of attending at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (Centro Médico Teknon or Clínica Plató). During this sessions, students will be tutored by the Associate Professors.

Evaluation systems and criteria

In person

Theoretical test with MIR questions (50%):

-        Method of test: multiple-choice test with 30 questions, each with 5 possible options.

-        Approved criteria: the approved stands at score 15 over 30. Each wrong answer reduces 0.25%.

-        Test time: 30 minutes.

-        Contents included in the test: theoretical lectures (MIR questions).

-        In case of isolation, the exam will be carried on online.

Continuous assessment (50%):

-        class attendance, participation in resolving Case Method and Problem-Based Learning.

The 2nd opportunity to be evaluated will consist of a multiple-choice test with 30 questions, each with 5 possible options.
