Historical clinical concepts of the etiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of periodontal diseases are studied and evaluated by review of classic literature.
Students enrolled must:
- Have basic knowledge on theoric of periodontics.
- Have mastered scientifical english
Provide all necessary information to develop and defend rationales for therapy on the basis of scientific evidence.
ANATOMY OF THE PERIODONTUM: Have knowledge of the structural and compositional features of periodontal tissues, as well as the structure-functions relationships to understanding periodontal tissue breakdown and the repair / regeneration of affected structures.
DIAGNOSIS AND CLASSIFICATION OF PERIODONTAL DISEASES:
- He/She should know the basic components of a complete periodontal examination and how important is data-collection activity to arrive at a diagnosis and develop a treatment plan.
-Have a comprehensive knowledge of the classification of periodontal diseases and features of each of them.
-He/She should be able to know the predictive value of the clinical signs to reveal probing attachment loss before and after periodontal therapy.
-Have knowledge of the radiographic parameters obtainable in periodontal practice, image processing for the perception of biologic processes and the clinical use and impact of radiographic parameters.
-Have knowledge of the different types of both microbiological and immunological tests that are available and their utility.
PATHOGENESIS OF PERIODONTAL DISEASES:
-Have knowledge of the general principles of disease causation and causal theory.
-Have knowledge of the microbial ecology of dental plaque and its role in periodontal disease.
-He/She should know the relationship of supra and subgingival calculus to periodontal disease.
-Have knowledge of the pattern and rates of progression of periodontal diseases.
GENETICS AND IMMUNOLOGY:
-Have knowledge of the gene polymorphisms associated with periodontitis.
-Have knowledge of innate and adaptive immunity response in the pathophysiology of periodontitis.
EPIDEMIOLOGY OF PERIODONTAL DISEASES: Have knowledge of prevalence, incidence, severity, risk factors, and predicting disease risk.
LOCAL CONTRIBUTING FACTORS: Have knowledge of localized tooth-related factors and their role in the pathogenesis of periodontal disease.
SYSTEMIC FACTORS IMPACTING THE PERIODONTUM: Have knowledge of systemic disorders that may affect increase the risk for periodontal diseases or alter their presentation, progression, or severity.
-Have knowledge of role that excessive occlusal forces play in the initiation and progression of periodontal disease.
-Have knowledge of occlusal analysis, diagnosis and management of occlusal trauma.
-Have knowledge of the mobility and its effect in the severity, progression and therapeutic outcomes of periodontal disease.
-Have knowledge of the effect of occlusal adjustment in association with periodontal therapy on attachment levels and tooth mobility.
-Have knowledge of the prognostic classification systems.
-He/She should know the prognostic value of some clinical, genetic, and radiographic variables in predicting future attachment loss.
NON-SURGICAL PERIODONTAL THERAPY:
-Have knowledge of the effects of non-surgical periodontal therapy on the distinct compartments of the periodontal lesion (the root surface, the soft tissues surrounding the tooth, and the osseous compartment of the periodontium).
-Have knowledge of the effect of non-surgical periodontal therapy on microbiota.
-Have knowledge of the non-surgical treatment modalities that are performed with the use of: hand, sonic or ultrasonic, motordriven instruments, or any combination of these instruments.
-Have knowledge of the factors that may affect the clinical outcomes of non-surgical periodontal therapy.
-He/she should know the best time interval after initial therapy to perform a reevaluation based on classic literature.
-Have knowledge of the importance of plaque-control measures and the relation between oral hygiene and periodontal disease.
-Have knowledge of devices and techniques available to perform an adequate plaque-control.
PHARMACOLOGY: Have knowledge of the effectiveness of the adjunctive use of local and systemic antimicrobials with scaling and root planning in the treatment of periodontitis. Have knowledge of the sequencing of antibiotic therapy.
CHEMOTHERAPEUTIC AGENTS: Have knowledge of the chemotherapeutic agents and its role as adjuncts to periodontal therapy.
-Have knowledge of the role of periodontal maintenance on the prevention of progression of periodontal disease in periodontally treated patients.
-He/She should know the maintenance interval and the main procedures that take place during the maintenance visit.
Students will not only learn basic concepts of periodontics but also develop critical thinking when evaluating scientific articles.

Teaching and learning activities
Critical evaluations will be made of classic literature published, and concepts and techniques will be discussed in a seminar format
Evaluation systems and criteria
At the end of each trimester, students will take an exam and must score a 7 out of 10 to pass. If a student does not obtain this score, he / she must repeat the exam after 1 week
