Introduction

In the event that the health authorities announce a new period of confinement due to the evolution of the health crisis caused by COVID-19, the teaching staff will promptly communicate how this may effect the teaching methodologies and activities as well as the assessment.


Objectives

The fundamental objective of the Graduate Program in Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology at the International University of Catalonia is to train professionals capable of applying the scientific knowledge and technical skills acquired in Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology in an ethical way, with efficiency and safety.

Article 10 of Chapter II of RD 1393/2007, of October 29, says that 'Postgraduate courses are aimed at acquiring advanced training, of a specialized or multidisciplinary nature, aimed at academic or professional specialization , or promote initiation in investigative tasks. ''

To fulfill this fundamental objective, the postgraduate study plan that we propose:

  • To teach the principles, ways and measures of protection in the use of radiation.

  • To train students to design, analyze, execute and interpret radiological images in Dentistry. Knowing the different radiographic techniques, in addition to knowing and managing highly specialized software for the imaging diagnosis of the oral and maxillofacial region.

  • Develop knowledge and skills in the methodological facets of work in Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology with special emphasis on teaching and research possibilities.

  • Show skills for the dissemination of scientific knowledge, according to the presentation, writing and publication criteria of the scientific community.

  • To provide management knowledge so that the specialist obtains the necessary competencies to direct and administer his own diagnostic center.

From pre-imaging exam considerations:

He is a professional whose standard criterion is the protection of his patients according to the international standard for reducing radiation doses to a minimum to obtain diagnostic benefits (ALARA / ALADA criteria).
For its professional work, the Oral and Maxillofacial Radiologist always considers the cost-benefit ratio with respect to the characteristics and number of examinations necessary and most appropriate for each particular case, so that it carries out its activity with the minimum risk of damage from the use of ionizing radiation and always with a view to an adequate level of resolution of the clinical concerns for which the respective imaging exams have been indicated for each patient.
Given the permanent advance in scientific and technological knowledge, the Oral and Maxillofacial Radiologist has a critical attitude and permanently updated information that allows him to adequately adopt the concepts that are beneficial to this discipline of Dentistry to put them into practice, which is why training Continuous academic is its natural feature.

From the imaging exams themselves:

He has the skills for the correct indication of conventional and highly complex imaging exams according to the characteristics of each clinical picture, thus being a permanent advisor to the general dentist, the specialist dentist and, sometimes, also the surgeon, to complement adequately the information from the clinical findings of the oral and maxillofacial territory.
In this way, the Oral and Maxillofacial Radiologist contributes in the diagnosis, control and treatment phases of the pathologies of the territory, together with generating information that complements the clinical findings and allows estimating the prognosis of the present pathologies.
It is prepared to carry out conventional and advanced radiographic examinations, as well as to be critically and adequately advised in the development of more complex examinations, with a view to always using the technology available in the public and private network of service providers. images.
It is the professional with the highest authority to interpret the images obtained from these exams, both in terms of the pathologies related to the reason that generated the request for the exam and, eventually, with the findings presented in them, always with a view to the return or preservation of oral health that the health team will provide as a comprehensive service to its patients.

Of his performance in the health team:

For this, this professional must work in work teams, since the activity of the Oral and Maxillofacial Radiologist is essentially an advisory activity and complements the clinical activity, whatever the specialty of dentistry, and eventually medical, that requires its services.
Likewise, it can correlate the imaging findings with the clinical and epidemiological realities of each individual in particular and of the population in general and, since it also knows the national health care systems at the dental level, it can perform in both the public and public sectors. the private one.
The Oral and Maxillofacial Radiologist has the ability to guide or contribute to scientific research that develops on the particular task of the specialty or in which the specialty constitutes support. It also has the potential to publicize its activities and train duly accredited assistant personnel to carry out support tasks in the field of this specialty.
At the same time, the Oral and Maxillofacial Radiologist has the necessary competencies to give his / her informed opinion on legal matters or expert opinions when the pertinent authorities deem it necessary.

Of responsibility:

For all the above, he is responsible for the procedures and results of the task of the specialty that he is in charge of administering, at the same time that he informs the corresponding administrative authorities of any irregularities that are incurred during his performance or that are found present in the clinical guideline guidelines that regulate activity in public and private healthcare networks that offer imaging services.

Learning outcomes of the subject

To train a specialist of the highest level in Oral and Maxillofacial Imaging, with solid scientific bases, with a high degree of updating, to interpret digital imaging exams (both 2D and multiplanar) capable of working as a team with other dental specialties, providing with Complementary information, both in the evaluation, diagnosis, pre-surgical planning and post-surgical control stages. The foregoing, through professional practice focused on the needs of the Patient, complying with appropriate management and protection protocols for the use of ionizing radiation and framed in the ethical and value principles of the U.I.C.

Syllabus

Block I: Introduction to Radiodiagnosis 1. General Principles of Radiology: X-ray properties. Formation of the radiological image. Radiological protection (concepts: ALARA / ALADA / DIMITRI) 2. 2D Digital Radiology: Intraoral and extraoral techniques: Anatomy and interpretation of periapical radiography and Bite-Wing. Anatomy and interpretation of panoramic radiography. Anatomy and interpretation of the lateral skull x-ray. Cephalometric analysis. Determination of bone age. Anatomy and interpretation of the postero-anterior radiography. Anatomy and interpretation of Waters radiography. Towne's X-ray anatomy and interpretation. 3. Basic concepts of administration, management and bioethics for the operation of a Radiological Clinic.

The Didactic Methodology of the learning process suggested for each Thematic Unit are free and attending to the achievement of the competences exposed in this document may include: Online master classes. Online seminars and practical steps. Modality of clinical cases assigned as a task to the student: Management of base software tools, preparation of a radiographic report, presentation of the clinical case, establishment of differential diagnoses, discussion and conclusions. Bibliographic reviews. Problem-based learning and discovery strategy. Preparation of thesis work. Others. Face-to-face week (scheduled activities): Activity 1. Activity 2. Activity 3. Activity 4. Evaluation systems and criteria

The evaluation will be carried out in all subjects, according to the following general criteria: Attendance percentage to theoretical-practical classes (established minimum of 90%): Equivalent to 20% of the final grade. Presentations of clinical cases: 6 DICOM files with clinical cases related to the theoretical subjects already exposed in the master classes will be uploaded to the platform weekly. Each student must work and prepare these cases. On the day of the seminar (each seminar module lasts for 1.5 hours), the case that the student must present will be raffled, for which it will have a maximum of 10 minutes, then there will be a final round of discussion of 5 minutes. This will ideally allow 6 cases to be presented for each module. Compliance with the parameters established for the presentation of cases will be evaluated, as described in the item Methodology and training activities. Equivalent to 40% of the final grade. The participation, argumentation and contributions of each student (based on the review of the current literature), in the final round discussion phase (in a summative way throughout the postgraduate course) is equivalent to 10% of the final grade. Compliance with the deadlines established for the thesis work: d.1.) Advance thesis project 1: 2% Final grade. d.2.) Advance thesis project 2: 2% Final grade. d.3.) Final review of the thesis project: 2% Final grade. d.4.) Pre-delivery of the thesis project (revision of form and substance): 2% Final grade. d.5.) Final delivery of thesis work: 2% Final grade. d.6.) Thesis defense (during face-to-face week, except for reasons of force majeure, in which case it must be done in the blended / blended modality): 15% Final grade. Scheduled activities during face-to-face week (in case of suspension for reasons of force majeure, this percentage is added to the thesis work item): 5%. Final qualification result: 100% Obtained from the sum of: Attendance percentage: 20%. Exposure of clinical cases: 40%. Participation in the final discussion round, after each clinical case: 10% Thesis work: 25%. Participation in face-to-face week activities: 5%.
