Syllabus

The content of the in-company training depends on the objective and the type of project that is proposed in the work plan. The content and the work placement period must be specified in the work plan and must be specifiedin conjunction with the external tutor of the company or the technology centre. The work plan will be evaluated by the academic tutor from our university and must be approved before the the work placement begins.

The work placement must be part of an agreement between the UIC Barcelona and the company or technnology centre of a curricular nature. The curricular external work placement cannot begin without a written agreement.

During the work placement period, the student is allowed to take other subjects for completion of their curriculum. However, it is the student’s responsibility to combine these different obligations and in no case should this affect the external work placement.

In the first semester, the student will have to choose one of the work placement modalities:

  1. Work placement in an external national organisation, in addition to internal Final Degree Project at UIC Barcelona.
  2. Work placement in an external national organisation as part of the Final Degree Project
  3. Work placement in an external international organisation (Erasmus) as part of the Final Degree Project within the same organisation

Teaching and learning activities

In person

Work placement take place onsite at the location that is determined by the company or research centre. Before work placement begins, the student must have an approved work plan.

The work placement is comprised of 240 hours at the company or research centre and 10 hours of onsite tutorial sessions at the university with the academic tutor. Distribution of the work placement hours is flexible and should be agreed with the company or research centre. The work placement should begin in the second semester and preferably be full-time. External work placements without a work plan and without following the assessment criteria will not be accepted.

Evaluation systems and criteria

In person

Evaulation methods are based on a series of evaulation forms from the external tutor and the assessment of the final report from the academic tutor.

Reports:

  • Intermediate evaluation report 20%
  • Final evaluation report 30%
  • Final report 50%

The intermediate assessment report serves only as a guide for the student and the academic tutor and will be used as base for improvement during the rest of the work placement period.

The final report will be prepared by the student and will be used to show the knowledge acquired during the work placement and the understanding of the external organisation, as well as a means of providing a critical reflexion about the added value of having a bioengineer on the project or to the general strategy of the organisation.

Once the work placement has ended, the university will issue an accreditation document that must contain the following aspects: cooperating entity where the work placement took place, description of the work placement and duration period and the exact dates, and the activities that have been carried out.

Important considerations:

  1. Plagiarism, copying or any other action that may be considered cheating will receive a zero in that evaluation section. Plagiarism during exams will lead to immediate failure of the subject.
  2. In the second-sitting exams, honors distinction will not be awarded; therefore, “Excellent” will be the maximum mark students can obtain.
  3. Changes in the calendar, exam dates or the evaluation system will not be accepted.

Exchange students (Erasmus and others) or repeaters will be subject to the same conditions as the rest of the students..
