Introduction

In the event that the health authorities announce a new period of confinement due to the evolution of the health crisis caused by COVID-19, the teaching staff will promptly communicate how this may effect the teaching methodologies and activities as well as the assessment.


To communicate with correctness and accuracy criteria is a core competency for any journalist. This competition requires not only skill, but above all, technical and practical. Any journalistic communication is established on the basis of written communication that provides security, clarity and depth. So, just on the basis of correctness in language and written communication, you can set the performance of the journalistic profession.

With the subject of Written Communication students will understand the importance of communication and every factor that integrates it; will acquire tools for generating content and organization and transmission of data, facts and arguments; will learn the keys of storytelling and writing techniques; will develop their creativity; and will practice with both text analysis as with their own writing style.

No pre-course requirements are needed to enrol in this subject.

Objectives

  • Learn to generate content and to relate it to other knowledge.
  • Properly structure ideas within a text.
  • Knowing argue with solidity, depth, and coherence.
  • Write correctly and accurately, acquire knowledge about the narrative techniques and understand its relevance.
  • Knowing the contents of orthographic and syntactic rules.
  • Making the most of the language for effective communication in accordance with established objectives.
  • Experiment with different narrative genres (narrative, short story, flash fiction, drama, poetry) and understand the characteristics and potential of each.
  • Differentiate the spoken text from the read one.
  • Improve one's writing style and understand the effect of certain stylistic and narrative choices.
  • Being able to share their own texts.
  • Learning to listen to critics and to extract what adds value.
  • Analyze texts in a constructive and reasoned manner.

  • They will have a greater command of language, creativity and can effectively manipulate it according to the proposed objectives.
  • They will have knowledge of rhetorical possibilities of language and its power effect on the reader. 
  • They will know how to analyze the narrative intentions hatched behind a text.

  • Communication: foundations, factors and objectives
  • Read as a writer: text analysis
  • The writing process. Generate, choose and sort content, write, edit
  • Explore the rhetorical source. Theme and idea
  • Th point of view
  • Narrative structures
  • Good writing: paragraphs, phrases, style, grammar, lexicon, cohesion, punctuation
  • Background and form: figurative language. The literary language in journalism.
  • Rhythm, tone and formalism
  • Written communication and oral communication
  • Objectivity and subjectivity
  • Editing a text and rewriting

Spelling course contents (Carolina Serra)

  • The accentuation
  • Standards and punctuation
  • Capitalization
  • Use of several letters in particular
  • Interference with the Catalan
  • Resource and referral sources (it will be reinforced over the entire course)
  • Vocabulary (will be reinforced along the entire course)

Evaluation systems and criteria

In person



The course consists of three sections: writing classes, workshop and a course of spelling. 

To approve you must also attend at least 80% of classes.

The writing portion has 90% of the final grade. The course of spelling 10%.

Each of the three parts is evaluated as follows:

Evaluation of writing classes (Carla Gracia)

  • Final exam: 50%
  • Midterm exam: 25%
  • Final work: 15%
  • Attitude, participation and class exercises: 10%

Course Evaluation spelling (Carolina Serra)

  • Final exam: 100%

Other calls:

Second call: If the student suspends the first call, must be submitted to the exam of the two parts of the subject. The final grade will be the weighted average of each part.

Third call: If the student suspends the subject in the second call, will have to register again for the whole subject and take it. The student will have to attend the classes of the two parts of the subject and pass it.

Fourth call: The student will have to examine and / or do the corresponding work to pass the subject.

Fifth call: If the student suspends the subject, they will have to take advantage of the conditions established by the extraordinary calls.
