Introduction
The oral cavity hosts over 700 bacterial species, many of which are causing infectious diseases such as periodontitis, caries and endodontic lesions. Throughout the course syllabus the most important basic and advanced concepts of oral microbiology will be presented, with special emphasis on the characterization of that most prevalent oral disease in humans, in the organization of the bacterial species in biofilms and diagnostic tools of molecular biology that are available to detect from salivary samples of plaque or anaerobic culture.
Pre-course requirements
Not required
Objectives
To understand and be able to apply the knowledge on the principles of oral microbiology.
To know and apply the major diagnostic tools Molecular Biology
To identify the most prevalent bacterial species in the oral cavity by different diagnostic techniques
To know the main lines of research in oral microbiology
Learning outcomes of the subject
The student will have advanced knowledge of Microbiology
The student will have ability to work in a multidisciplinary team.
The student will have ability to integrate new knowledge through research and study, and deal with complexity.
